fashion friday: one shirt, three ways

One of the keys to stretching your wardrobe is being about to take a single piece and stretch it as far as you can! Your challenge for the week is to take one piece in your closet and figure out a few more ways to wear it!

(all pieces from madewell)

pieces from target

Here’s your challenge this week, Ladies — take a piece you almost always wear the same… and mix it up! Wear that sweater dress with jeans, layer that button down under a sweater and mix things up!!

what i wore this week 1.11.12

Once again, we have what I wore!

I wore this shopping with Jo-Lynne around Philly. It was freezing, freezing that day, so I confess that I chickened out
and wore my boots when it was time to go.

sweater: really old boyfriend cardigan from target {similar here for 40% off} {and here for 30% off with code NOW30}
top: ruffled shell from LOFT {similar here} {and here}
jeans: the skinny by 7 for All Mankind {buy here} {similar here}
heels: old, old aerosoles {similar here}

This was a bum-around-the-house day I mean work day.ย  I was working from home. It was another super dooper cold day, and this jacket (that I picked up on super clearance at Jennifer on the Avenue) is unbelieveably warm!

jacket: grey jacket {similar here} {and here}
top: long sleeve tee from old navy {buy it here}
jeans: old comfy flares from target {buy it here}
shoes: pumas {similar here}

This was Saturday, when I was running errands, watching Beauty and the Beast in 3D with the kiddos and enjoying a rare 60 degree day in January! I threw on the blue scarf as I was leaving the house and it was a bit chilly, but I think I like it. Are two pops of color too many, do you think?

sweater: cardigan from LOFT – found this on clearance for only $5 {buy it here for 30% off with code NOW30!}
top: also picked up on clearance from LOFT – on the same day, actually {buy similar here for 30% off with code NOW 30}
jeans: distressed straight leg jean from LOFT – also on clearance, but 2 years ago {buy similar here for 40% off}
belt: yellow patent skinny belt from Target {buy similar here}
scarf: really old – no idea where its from! {buy similar here}

beauty and the beast in 3D

Last Saturday we got to go see a sneak peek of Disney’s Beauty and the Beast.. in 3D! I love Beauty and the Beast – I still remember seeing it in the theater when it was first released in 1991! My girls are huge princess fans, but have never seen their favorite movies on the big screen. So we have loved how Disney is re-releasing classics in the cinema so a whole new generation can experience these movies as they were meant to be seen! We saw The Lion King this fall and we were super excited to see Belle!!

The verdict? All 3 girls (and mama) LOVED IT! Watch our review and see:

Seeing it in 3D really was amazing. The ending (SPOILER ALERT: Do I need to do a spoiler alert for that? Well, if you’ve been living on Mars and not see it, don’t keep reading.) when the Beast turns back into a man – the 3D effect was really incredible. All three girls mentioned how cool it was – they were actually holding out their hands during the movie trying to catch the fireworks. So sweet.

Make sure you check it out – Beauty and the Beast in 3D will be in theaters on January 13 for a limited time.

jcrew sale!

Like I said yesterday, its been a long week! But of course I still managed to find some lovely things to share with you today!!

J Crew is having a major clearance sale and when you use the code SHOPNOW you get an additional 25% off! J Crew has such fabulous basics and perfect trend pieces – but it is so pricey that now is the perfect time to pick up a few pieces!

This velvet schoolboy blazer is perfect for fall and winter – so fun. And with the sale its down to $75 (from $198!) Black would be so classic, but I have to admit… that dark blossom is fabulous!!

This Suzette blouse is darling. I love the tie neck, the detailing on the front… so feminine, but would look so polished with a blazer or pencil skirt.

Oh. My. LOVE these shoes!! And love the $33 price tag!

ooo – I wish I had a place to wear this! Only $50!

Enjoy!

long week

Its been a quite a week.

One of those weeks where the lows outweighed the highs.

We’re planning a sudden trip to New England next week for my husband’s grandmother’s memorial service. Watching our kids deal with grief for the first time is beyond heartbreaking.

We learned just how expensive it is to fix the automatic door on a minivan.ย  The answer? WAY too expensive. Add on new brakes and about 10 other things that a vehicle needs as it hits 100,000 miles and you get a free mini-heart attack with your bill.

I’m still sick. Bleh.

This pretty much sums up how I feel today:

Anyone have good news to share? Cheer me up, peeps!

what i wore – 1.4.12

I had a week that was half chic, half helping someone move (or the opposite of chic).

Wednesday my husband and I went on a date (WOOT!) so I actually got a little polished up to go out. I’ve been dying for an excuse to wear my new shoes, so I planned the rest of my outfit around them ๐Ÿ˜‰ These are my only jeans that are long enough to wear with these super high heels!

shirt: Old Navy, several years ago {similar here}
jeans: Dojo by 7 for All Mankind {buy here}
shoes: Cecila by Sole Society {buy here}

Thursday was spent working from home, so I was just looking to be comfy while drinking massive amounts of coffee.

sweater: Loft, last year {similar here – and its 40% off}
jeans:
Dojo by 7 for All Mankind {buy here}
shoes:
my old favorite wedges from Target {buy similar here}

On Friday, we went downtown to Reading Terminal Market, so I wanted to be comfy and warm! My Ugg Bromme boots are amazingly cozy – perfect for walking around on a chilly day! These jeans are pricey, but WORTH EVERY PENNY. They are the most comfy jeggings ever – and the true miracle is they actually stay up, unlike most jeggings that slip down your bum when you bend over.

sweater: drapey open cardigan from target โ€“ I love the shape (and price) of this cardi! {buy it here}
top: really old coral tshirt from old navy {buy similar here}
pants: the skinny jean by 7 for All Mankind {buy it here}
boots:
Ugg Bromme Boot {but it here}
scarf: Lycra Viscose Scarf by LA Purse {buy it here}

Saturday through Monday was dominated by moving my in-laws into a new apartment, so I was looks super chic in sweatshirts, yoga pants, sneakers, baseball caps and other standard “moving fare” like messy ponytails and general griminess.

jacket: Old Navy Fleece {buy it here}
shirt: my husband’s old college tshirt {buy it here}
pants: Old Navy yoga pants {buy it here}
sneakers: New Balance {buy it here}

new best friend

Gracie wanted another American Girl doll more than anything this Christmas, but didn’t get her. She’s such a poor, neglected child, right? ๐Ÿ˜‰ So this resourceful little business girl managed to buy herself and Ruthie a new friend.

We were so proud of her. She came to us and told us how she really wanted Kit, why she wanted her in particular and how she wanted to pay for her with her Christmas money. (My in-laws usually take the kids to Toys R Us and let them go nuts, but she asked if she put the money towards her doll instead.) With that, plus selling all her gift cards to the Bank of Mom and Dad, she had just enough money for Kit! Such a smart little thing!!

Now she’s saving her money for more American Girl clothes for her girls.

By the way – 5-7 days for shipping is approximately FOREVER when you are 7.

day in philly

We went into Philly on Friday and started the day in one of my favorite places, Reading Terminal Market, for breakfast at the Dutch Eating Place. Best breakfast in Philly.

If you’ve ever had a hankering for a pancake the size of your head, this is the place to go.ย  Seriously – out of control yummy pancakes, french toast and bacon the way it was meant to be – thick, crispy and in abundance.

We wandered around finding all sorts of amazing culinary wonders. Reading Terminal Market is a cook’s paradise. Or a eater’s paradise. If you can’t find it here, it probably doesn’t exist. And discover things you didn’t know existed. Like Bacon Salt. Oh yes, BACON SALT. *cue angels singing*

And hit the Christmas train! Colin could have stood here all day.

Then we headed over to Macy’s for the Holiday Light Show, then took the kids to Chinatown. Grace is in love with China and keeps asking to go there. Since we are a little short on vacation time, we did the next best thing ๐Ÿ˜‰
The kids were fascinated by it – we’ll need to come back when we can spend more time – and we’re not stuffed full of pancakes!

What did you do for New Years?
