and then the &%#$ bunny was gone

This morning, I was downstairs in my bathrobe pouring that first cup of sweet, sweet, nectar coffee, and my husband who had just gone outside to check on the bunny said, "Melissa, come out here for a minute."

I knew something was wrong.

The bunny was gone. GONE. Cage door hanging open and no sign of the bunny. Gone.

Despite our trying to be discreet, the kids immediately figured out something was going on and burst into tears. We assured them that Violet was probably just being silly and playing hide and seek under the shed, not to worry, go say a prayer and eat your breakfast while Mommy and Daddy go find that silly bunny.

Meanwhile, we were watching the rush hour traffic zoom down our street, remembering the fox we had seen waking through our backyard just yesterday, realizing that our bunny just is not the smartest bunny in the world and realizing that – if we were lucky – we'd never find this bunny. If we weren't – we'd find the fox's leftovers.

So at 7:00 in the morning, we pulled on coats over our pajamas and were wandering around our yard yelling for a bunny who probably doesn't know her own name and hates us and probably was proposely trying to stay lost.

Then – you are not going to believe this – WE FOUND HER. I saw a flash of white out of the corner of my eye diving under the car. She was hiding behind the wheels of the car!  So everyone who drove down our street this morning, got to see our pajama-clad butts sticking up as we tried for the next 20 minutes to get the &%#$ bunny out from under the &%#$ car.

We finally caught her and got the &%#$ squirming. kicking bunny back in the &%#$ cage.

The kids are thrilled. And we are of course grateful to God that our bunny miraculously survived the night and didn't run away, get run over or eaten.

But if anyone is looking for a pet bunny, I might have the perfect one for you.

i’m having tshirts made up

…that say "We survived the Stomach Bug 2010." Sounds like I could sell a ton.

Gracie had it on Monday, then Ellie fell Thursday.  And on Friday night, I was the lucky one. And Colin was sick with a 102 fever. And – did I forget to mention this again – my husband was in Europe. Whee.

Being sick sucks, but being sick when your a parent and you're by yourself with three kids is pretty brutal. Especially when its sick with a particularly, um, violent strain of the stomach bug. Especially when one or more of those kids is sick as well and needs care. I got approximately 2 hours of sleep this weekend.

My favorite moment? Hard to choose. How about when I was in the bathroom throwing up and Colin was banging on the door yelling that he wanted the CARS cereal bowl, not the ELMO cereal bowl. (I'll get right on that, Sweetie.) Or when I discovered Colin sitting in his bed eating Children's Tylenol. (Yet another call to poison control.) Or maybe when I pulled something in my shoulder while sleeping in Colin's toddler bed with him and then could no longer move my neck to the left. Or maybe I'll just go with all the throwing up in general. Cause that was definitely a high point.

But before we never ever ever speak of this again, can I get a big shout out to my girl Ellie who stepped up and was an unbelievable blessing to me! She got up with her siblings, made breakfast all by herself, cleaned her room (and vacuumed) and generally entertained her brother and sister for me while I was laying on the floor of the bathroom for 12 hours. She was amazing.

And thanks to all of you locals who offered to bring ginger ale and saltines to my door. I really appreciate it!! I'd give you a big kiss, but I'd be afraid to pass this on.

We pulled it together by Sunday, though and were able to go trick-or-treating!  (Much to the kids relief!) We had an adorable little lion:

fashion friday: stuff

As you can see by the clever title, we are feeling very ambitious today. I had big plans really – but then my daughter came home from school with the stomach bug, so plans changed. So I'm sitting here with her head in my lap as I peruse the interweb for a few little gems to make your Friday fun!

I. Love. This. If you are planning to buy me a Christmas gift, by all means. Be my guest. (Its 50% off! At Anthropologie!!)

nagging me to insanity

(warning: total brain dump ahead)

I don't think that Gracie know I can hear her right now.

She just got in trouble and sent to her room. So she is sitting on her bed, crying, and talking about how "Its not fair. I wait and wait and wait and she never lets me do anything. Its not fair."

She is in trouble – once again – for nagging. When she gets something into her head (like this morning, it was painting with glitter paints) she will ask me every 5 minutes if she can do it now. After I have said things like, "Not now, Gracie." "Mama is in the shower, Gracie, so you need to wait." "Gracie, I said not now." "NOT NOW." "Do NOT ask me again, Gracie." "Gracie, I said to wait." and usually ends with something like "NO. GIVE ME THE PAINTS AND GO SIT IN TIMEOUT."

She drives me crazy.

And I have talked and talked to her about not nagging but she still does it all the time. For everything. If she wants a drink of juice, she will ask me every 2 seconds until she gets one. If I buy a special craft, she will ask me every single hour of every single day if she can do it now.

And she doesn't even seem to realize she is doing it! I'll say, "Gracie, you JUST asked me that!" And she's like "I did?"

I have no idea how to handle this.

I've started saying that if she asks me to do something three times after I have said no, she doesn't get to do it. But she is not getting to to anything now. I realize she just wants to paint – which is not a bad thing – but she seems to have no concept of the other people in the family and their needs. I have a two year old, she clearly cannot paint when I'm not available to sit right there. We have homework to do, errands to run, school to attend – there is not a lot of free time in the day, so it is hard to fit in crafts these days. And I know she misses it, but I just can't some days and she doesn't understand. She's six – this shouldn't be that hard of a concept.

I'm also noticing she does this with her siblings. "Ellie lets play horses." "Ellie! Lets play horses. Comeon!" "MOM! Ellie won't play horses with me!" (Meanwhile poor Ellie is sitting quietly trying to read a book. Because that all happened in about 2 minutes.) Its coming out pretty clearly as bossiness towards her siblings… maybe I should look at nagging as her trying to boss me around? We always tell her when she gets bossy that "its not loving to force people to always do what YOU want!" I don't know. Is this nagging a carryover of bossiness?

What do you think? Does anyone have words of advice here?

try this: apple cake

Yesterday I made this Apple Cake recipe I snagged from my friend, Jen's blog, City Sweet.

It. Is. Fabulous. Make it. Now. Then mail me some, because I took mine to Bible Study and everyone gobbled it up!

Apple Cake

3 eggs
3/4 cup oil
1/4 cup applesauce
2 cups sugar
2 teaspoons vanilla
3 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking soda
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon cinnamon
dash of ground cloves and ginger
3 cups finely chopped, peeled apples
Heat oven to 350 degrees. Grease and flour large bundt pan or 9"x13" cake pan. Beat eggs on high. Add oil, applesauce, sugar and vanilla. Sift together flour, baking soda, salt and spices. Add to first mixture. Quickly add chopped apples.
Bake 60 minutes. Let cool in bundt pan for 10 minutes then move to cooling rack. When completely cooled, dust with powdered sugar.

typical monday madness

Well, the stomach bug made an appearance around 11:00 last night. Poor Gracie was sick seven times, I think. Its a bit of a blur. So I'll be spending the rest of the day with her (and keeping an eye on Colin, just in case.) Poor baby. It was awful! Is there anything that says "parent" more than cleaning up puke in the middle of the night?I feel awful this morning, but it is hopfully just from lack of sleep.

***

Stomach bug aside, we enjoyed a fun family weekend over here. I didn't share this while he was gone, but my husband was in Europe last week. So while I was at home alone, running the household, doing homework, etc, he kept sending me pictures like this from his iPhone:
Basel
Sigh. Isn't it lovely? Doesn't it make you want to put on a peacoat, jeans and riding boots, wear a chic scarf, and go for a stroll? Or maybe sip a hot cappuccino in a little cafe?  (Not that my husband was doing that. He was, you know, working and stuff.)

But I managed to survive 7 days on my own, with some help from caffeine, friends, and frozen foods. We were thrilled that he came home on Friday – Colin has been following him around like a puppy dog saying "Daddy? Daddy! Daddy! Daddy! DADDY!" Its really cute.

***

We got a new oil tank last week as well. Boy, that was expensive. I can think of about 1,000 other ways I would have liked to use that money on the house. Bah. Home ownership is really overrated sometimes.

***

Does anyone have a good Beef and Barley Soup recipe? I can't find one.

***

The past few days, I've been trying out this new skin care system, Therapon. It. Is. Amazing. I'll share more later, but I'm loving this stuff! I've also just bought Tide for the first time in years – it was on clearance in Target – and I was blown away by the Acti-Lift technology. It got a 3 day old ketchup stain out of Colin's shirt!! I'm buying this from now on! And my third new obsession? Smoothies. I've been making them for lunch almost every day. YUM!

stores you think you can’t shop in but you really can

I know, I  know. You wouldn't be caught dead in these stores. You walk past those stores and swear that your daughter will only wear that Over Your Dead Body. You think you're too old. But they're really worth a look, I promise!! You can get some fabulous trendy pieces for next to nothing.

**But just a warning – you will wear a bigger size in these stores. So prepare your ego. I wear 2-3 sizes bigger in most of these stores. It sucks a little bit.** Also, these stores are a GREAT place to try out trends on the cheap!

Forever 21 – This is a great place to find fabulous accessories for next to nothing: like silver hoop earrings for $1.50 or a fabulous layered beaded necklace for under $10.  Or how about this tailored blazer for under $30?

Forever 21 at ShopStyle

Or these fantastic nude pumps – one of the hottest trends right now – for $19?

Forever 21 at ShopStyle

H&M – I. Love. This. Store.
They're sizes run really small and lots of it is just too young and trendy for me, but you can find some fantastic stuff!
I think I must have this sweater.

Or this fabulously fabulous cardigan!

Charlotte Russe – Again, accessories are a must see, but you can find some great clothes! I picked up this sweater a few weeks ago and I wear it all the time!
I love these boots:

and they have some really cute bags as well:

This pencil skirt is gorgeous!

Target – You can get fabulous things at Target. Really! Look around and you will really be amazed at the little gems you'll come across. Some of my favorite pieces are from there. (Remember the Target dress I wore to Ralph Lauren Headquarters that people kept complimenting me on?) Check out this outfit – would you ever have imagined something this elegant is from Target?
