fashion friday: photo shoot

Tomorrow we have a family photo shoot with Kate Giovinco Photography and I am totally stressed out about what to wear.

Naturally.

Its going to be outdoors and perfect fall weather, so I’m thinking sweaters and jeans?I want to coordinate, but not be matchy-matchy. Here’s a few tips that I’m going by…

Color-Blocking

Group photos can bring one of the season’s hottest trends, color-blocking, into action. Arrange your family in different bold hues for a stylish, runway-ready look! Recommended color choices this season include jewel tones like rich purple, cobalt blue, emerald green and lipstick red. We went with reds and pinks paired with neutral gray!

Get Comfortable

Cozy knits, specifically in shades of ivory or chocolate brown, will be trending this holiday season; and the textures of sweaters can play beautifully in photos. Pair with similarly colored bottoms for just the right amount of coordination. How cozy is this?

Accessorize

Opt for one large statement piece and one small accent piece per person, such as a hair accessory or scarf – minimal accessories with maximum impact.

I’m leaving towards cozy knits in grays and blues… what do you think?

Have you ever done a family photo shoot? What did you wear?

evening with elnett

Last night, I had a few friends over to join me in an Evening with Elnett.

Elnett Satin Hairspray is a fabulous and uber-luxurious line of hairsprays from L’Oréal that has been around for almost 40 years, but is just now available in retail outlets across the US. While it is a favorite of models, celebs and top stylists around the world, it is perfect for busy moms as well!
Elnett offers long lasting hold that disappears at the touch of a brush, leaving hair clean and shiny with a satin touch. Hair stylists love it for fashion shows and photo shoots where models are wearing multiple hair styles. Which is just perfect for us busy moms!  I can use Elnett in the morning, throw my hair up on a trip to the gym and then brush it out later for date night – so much nicer than layering on products all day that leave my hair dull and crunchy.

We had a fabulous fall spread:

evening with elnett

yummy!!

We had a hair station set up with flat irons, curling irons, hair do-dads and some Elnett products: Strong Hold, Extra Strong Hold and Extra Strong Hold with UV Filter. Yes, you read that right. Hairspray with UV filter to protect color treated hair! Amazing!! You can protect your color by using a product you’re probably using anyway.

We all tried out the hairsprays and had passionate, in-depth conversations about hair that only a group of girlfriends can have.

My personal favorite stylist, Gracie, was on hand to style my hair. Isn’t it cute?

We also got to view some fantastic tutorials by Johnny Lavoy, a consulting hair expert for L’Oréal. My favorite was his tutorial on defined waves – so gorgeous and it looks so easy! My daughter saw it and squealed “Its Taylor Swift’s hair!! I WANT IT!” I can’t wait to try it on her!

Thanks so much to L’Oréal and Mom Central for sponsoring this event and introducing us to Elnett!! To keep up with all the latest from L’Oréal, you can follow them on facebook and twitter. And check out my review of Elnett on my fashion blog, All Things Chic!

disclosure: I was compensated for refreshments and supplies for hosting this event, as well as receiving compensation for my time. as always, all opinions are my own.

fall trends: bold gold

Another hot trend for fall is GOLD! I own so little gold jewelry – I’m determined to add more to my jewelry stash! I mean, its my duty to my fashion blog, right? To buy jewelry?? (Go with it.) Lets find some gorgeous gold pieces to add to our fall wardrobes…

One piece that I’ve been drooling over is the Chantilly Lace Chandelier Earrings in the new fall Stella & Dot Collection. How gorgeous are these?

gorgeous. delicate, but bold.

And the matching cuff is TO DIE FOR! I saw one just like this by Aurelie Bidermann for over $1300.
I’m more drawn to a chunky gold bracelet – kind of like this one.
I bought these earrings recently and I’ve worn them constantly.
This Lace Paillettes Neckalce by Anthropologie is so sweet – and under $40!
Oh my. My my my. I love the Shepherd Moon Necklace!!

How about you? Are you into gold this season?

fall fashion alert: flares are back

One of fall’s hottest denim look is the flare jean.

I am very excited about this.

If jeggings and skinny jeans are not your thing, rejoice! Flares are so flattering on just about anyone and make your legs look slimmer while balancing out curves. But you don’t have to worry about looking like one of Charlie’s Angels. (Not that looking like one of Charlie’s Angels would be bad… They’re hot!) There are some more subtle flares that you can feel comfortable pulling off even if you don’t have a boho look.

The Rachel Bellbottom by 7 for all Mankind is DIVINE. Perfect. Gorgeous. And they’re only on Piperlime. Guess what is on my wishlist for fall now?

Although Joe’s Jeans Visionaire Flare Jeans are fabulous. Perfect for casual everyday wear.

I love the look of the Skinny Mini Flare Jean from Old Navy. Although I’m not sure they’ll look good on someone over 25… they’re pretty low cut.

This Trouser Jean from Gap is amazing! LOVE that cut!

What do you think? Will you wear the flare?

fashion friday: bathing suits when you’re tiny on top

I recently had a friend beg me to do a post on bathing suits for small chested women. I’m one too, so I understand the challenges. But we should be thankful – we can actually pull off a lot of styles that our busty friends can’t. There are some great tricks to making the most of what you have!

First off, a few things to avoid:

cups that are not filled out? not flattering

no padding at all... not flattering!!

So lets talk about what IS flattering…

1. Halter tops: I highly recommend a halter top. You get good coverage and the deep v-neck really enhances what you have.

2. Ruffles and Ruching: Add volume where there is none.

Ruffled bandeau bikini top by Old Navy, Ruched banded bandeau tank by J Crew, Ruched swing tank top by J Crew, Isabella by MiracleSuit, Ruffled Wrapped Halter Suit by Anthropologie. Mossimo Tankini Top by Target

3. Patterns: Use patterns as your friend! Draw attention and create curves!

Sayulita Banded Halter Tankini by Athleta, Goa Halter Tankini by Athleta, Bold Stripe Halter Tankini by Athleta, Mossimo Polka Dot Tankini by Target

Its Memorial Day! Break out those summer whites and head to the beach! (Well, I’m actually going camping. In the woods. In a TENT. What’s the opposite of glamorous?) What essentials do you need to pack?

Swimsuit and Coverup for the beach:

Bold Stripe Halter Tankini by Athleta, Bold Stripe Full Tide Reversible Bottom by Althleta, Gradient-Lens Sunglasses by Old Navy, Flip Flops by Old Navy, Beaded Cowboy Hat by Old Navy

Breezy Dress for dinner out:

Vertical Breeze Dress by ModCloth, Dee Earring in Turquoise by Kendra Scott, Audra Bracelet in Turquoise by Kendra Scott, Fantastik by Steve Madden

Casually Cool for sightseeing:

Linen Blend Tunic ($19.50), Perfect Khaki Shorts ($19.50), Beaded Flower Bracelet ($8.80), Layered Island Necklace ($5.50), Flower Sandal ($24)

What is your favorite?

fashion friday: dressing kids on a budget

Thank you Old Navy for sponsoring my post today about baby and toddler styles. Old Navy is giving you 30% off everything in their baby and toddler summer collection, plus get an additional 15% off in-store.

I don’t know about you, but my kids burn through clothes. They don’t wear them out (usually) but mainly they just grow so darn fast! And, as I’ve shared before here on Girlymama, Old Navy is one of my go-to stores for my kids. Old Navy Kids clothes are cute, stylish and very affordable.  I end up here every season buying staples like jeans, t-shirts, tights, and jackets for my kids. Their stuff this season is too cute!

Hand-me-downs: My girls are out of the toddler department at this point. (Hold me.) But lucky for me I have three nieces that still are and they are benefiting from all of the hand-me-downs from my girls! Don’t be shy about accepting hand-me-downs. This spring, my friend Kelly gave me two huge bags of clothes for my son that her little one had outgrown (tons of Old Navy shorts, khakis and tees). And it was awesome!  Now I have to buy that much less for him this spring!

Transition the seasons: Every little girl needs a tutu and that’s a fact. (My Gracie has approximately 6, but she’s extremely girly.) Pair your little one’s tutu with a cute tshirt or tank and flip flops in the summer, then transition it into fall and winter by adding tights and a cardigan. Now she can wear it twice as long! The same goes for little sundresses. My Gracie wears her sundresses in winter with a long sleeves tshirt underneath and tights or leggings.

oh, the sweetness. makes me want to twirl.

The same goes for my little guy’s beloved graphic tees. In cooler weather, I just layer a long-sleeved tshirt underneath and change the cargo shorts for jeans!

we're huge superhero fans over here!!!

And finally, Shop the Sales! When that clearance rack is an additional 30% off, stock up for the next season! Browse the next size or two up and tuck it away for later. When Christmas is over, buy NEXT year’s Christmas dress for a fraction of the price. Check out this fashion haul I did a month or so ago when I hit that Old Navy clearance rack hard!!

I was selected for this sponsorship by the Clever Girls Collective, which endorses Blog With Integrity, as I do.

this is a sign

I’ve fallen in love.

With a shoe.

(Run with me here.)

Meet the object of my desire:

le sigh

I’ve admired the Stuart Weitzman “Alex” Espadrille Sandal ever since I saw Jennifer Aniston wearing them practically all last summer. They seem like those shoes you would wear constantly because they go with absolutely everything.

photo from vivafashionblog

But alas. They cost $365. Not bad, considering what some celeb shoes cost. (cough cough, Christian Louboutins) But a bit much for me. Okay, a LOT much for me. I’ve been stalking Zappos watching the sales, but to no avail.

Then, look what I found. *cue angels singing*
The Fantasik by Steve Madden. On sale for $69 at Piperlime. IN MY SIZE.

And the Fashion Angels Rejoiced.

fashion friday: fashion resolutions

I’d sure love to have a new look for the new year. But for most of us, a new wardrobe, a personal stylist and a $500 haircut are not at our disposal to update our looks. So let’s look at some practical ways for us to update our looks for the new year:

Underthings
Hanes Sometimes, its not your clothes that are making you look bad. Underthings are called “Foundation Garments” for a reason – your whole look is built over them and they can make or break you. Having children, losing and/or gaining weight and age can change things. Don’t just wear the same size and brand you always have – make sure that what you’re wearing FITS.

Let’s declare right now: Let 2011 be the Year of Keeping our Underwear Private. No more pantylines, no more whale tails, no more back fat, no more bra straps hanging out your clothes. I’m talking seamless panties, seamless bras… Invest a little money in your underthings. It will make a WORLD of difference in your look.  You don’t have to spend a fortune: Hanes makes wonderful seamless bras and panties that are really affordable and high quality.

Shapewear

Assets Repeat after me: “Embrace the shapewear. Shapewear is your friend.” Shapewear is on every celebrity you see on the red carpet. It was on every model in the fashion show I was in earlier this year. And its probably on most of your friends.

Trust me.

I have two favorite brands of shapewear. (Yes, I wear Shapewear. And I’m not ashamed to admit it.)  Assets by Sarah Blakely is terrific. It lasts forever, is affordable, really stays in place, and you can find it at Target or Loft. Yummie Tummie is wonderful as well, but pricier.  Shapewear is a bit of an investment – but you’ll wear it for years.

Clothes that do more:

1. Knit_Leggings_Black[1] There are so many clothes out there that have shapewear built in. Yes, you read that right – clothes that make you look skinny. Yummie Tummie makes leggings with shapewear that are fantastic – they not only give you a smooth look, but slim your whole leg! Nice! They make adorable tops as well. Miraclebody Jeans are fabulous – I wear the Jeggings all the time. Assets have really nice tights.

And did you know that they even have… wait for it… bathing suits with shapewear?? Seriously, girls, its a great time to be a woman! Brands from Lands End to Victoria’s Secret to Spanx have amazing bathing suits that will hold in all that you’re trying to hide. And they don’t look like shaping suits – its your little secret.

Add Accessories

Fullscreen capture 12302010 32308 PM Two of the season’s hottest accessories are belts and scarves. Go crazy, girls. They are super affordable, easy to add and are such a terrific way to quickly update your look.
Add a pop of color to jeans and a black sweater with a bright or textured scarf.
Cinch a tunic over your jeggings with a belt and you’ll instantly look on trend!

Check out Forever 21, Urban Outfitters and Aldo for cool jewelry for practically nothing. Accessorizing is also a great way to try a new look without spending a lot of money.
When it really comes to sprucing up your look, there really are no shortcuts: it starts on the inside.Drink more water. Eat right.  And give a gift to yourself: one hour a week. Just one hour. By taking just 20 minutes, three times a week to exercise, you’ll be amazed at the difference you’ll see in your look! You’ll be more energized, your skin will be better, your clothes will fit better, you’ll look younger – not to mention thinner!
