mothering fail

  • The other morning Ellie woke me up at 5:45. I told her to go back to bed. Not super gently.
  • Then Colin woke up at 6. And we immediately went to the potty, since mornings are usually the only time he manages to go potty lately. He somehow peed sideways (!?!?!?!?) and managed to get himself, the floor, the wall and the carpet in the hallway (?!?!??!??!!!!) wet.
  • I got him cleaned up, sent him up to our bed and cleaned up the mess.
  • Finally at 7:00 we all went downstairs for breakfast. Where Colin dropped his yogurt in his lap (That’s organic! Do you know how much that cost!?!?) Then someone knocked over their orange juice.
  • Did I mention we’re overrun with ants? So the orange juice should really help this issue.
  • And that this was the only morning all week that we had to be out the door by 8:30?

I did not handle this well. Let’s just leave it at that.

I have tons of excuses. I’m tired. My husband had been traveling all week. My allergies are making me feel awful….

But those are not excuses. Now that I’m looking back at it, I wasn’t even angry at them. I was angry because I was inconvenienced and my morning wasn’t going as planned.

I apologized.
Hugs were given and accepted.
We started over.
Once again.

fashion friday: dressing kids on a budget

Thank you Old Navy for sponsoring my post today about baby and toddler styles. Old Navy is giving you 30% off everything in their baby and toddler summer collection, plus get an additional 15% off in-store.

I don’t know about you, but my kids burn through clothes. They don’t wear them out (usually) but mainly they just grow so darn fast! And, as I’ve shared before here on Girlymama, Old Navy is one of my go-to stores for my kids. Old Navy Kids clothes are cute, stylish and very affordable.  I end up here every season buying staples like jeans, t-shirts, tights, and jackets for my kids. Their stuff this season is too cute!

Hand-me-downs: My girls are out of the toddler department at this point. (Hold me.) But lucky for me I have three nieces that still are and they are benefiting from all of the hand-me-downs from my girls! Don’t be shy about accepting hand-me-downs. This spring, my friend Kelly gave me two huge bags of clothes for my son that her little one had outgrown (tons of Old Navy shorts, khakis and tees). And it was awesome!  Now I have to buy that much less for him this spring!

Transition the seasons: Every little girl needs a tutu and that’s a fact. (My Gracie has approximately 6, but she’s extremely girly.) Pair your little one’s tutu with a cute tshirt or tank and flip flops in the summer, then transition it into fall and winter by adding tights and a cardigan. Now she can wear it twice as long! The same goes for little sundresses. My Gracie wears her sundresses in winter with a long sleeves tshirt underneath and tights or leggings.

oh, the sweetness. makes me want to twirl.

The same goes for my little guy’s beloved graphic tees. In cooler weather, I just layer a long-sleeved tshirt underneath and change the cargo shorts for jeans!

we're huge superhero fans over here!!!

And finally, Shop the Sales! When that clearance rack is an additional 30% off, stock up for the next season! Browse the next size or two up and tuck it away for later. When Christmas is over, buy NEXT year’s Christmas dress for a fraction of the price. Check out this fashion haul I did a month or so ago when I hit that Old Navy clearance rack hard!!

I was selected for this sponsorship by the Clever Girls Collective, which endorses Blog With Integrity, as I do.

letting go. and letting little people load the dishwasher.

Lately we have been encouraging our kids to take more responsibility around the house. Now that I started working part-time (Did I not mention that? I’ve probably been too busy!), help is just what I need around here. Obviously, its important to give kids responsibilities for jobs around the home. Its not just to be helpful to busy parents, but teaching children to become cooperative members of a household is one of the best ways to teach them responsibility. And it is a vital step in developing caring, considerate adults.

I know this.

But it is seriously trying my patience. You have no idea.

I’m one of those people who usually just does things myself because I want it done “just so.”  The dishes must be done immediately after dinner. The plates go here, the bowls go there, the cups go here and the coffee cups must go over there. So it is hard for me to sit at the table while a 8-year-old and 6-year-old load the dishwasher with GOOD HEAVENS a 3-year-old helping. Oh, you should see the way the kids load the dishwasher.

It makes me twitch. I am not kidding.

And, oh, the messes. The living room can be perfectly clean. I blink… and its trashed. And their rooms. THEIR ROOMS. LORD, HAVE MERCY. And who cleans it up? Me. But why? What is that teaching my kids? Now that the girls are in elementary school, its time to make their toys and their room their responsibility.

Hold me.

Their room is a great training ground for them to learn responsibility for their possessions. Learning to set the table, make a bed and run a vacuum cleaner are basic skills that are just as important as learning ABCs. If we continually clean up their messes, what are they learning? How is that helping them? And if I continually criticize the job they are doing, how will that encourage them to keep at it?

No. We need to let them do these chores on their own. And keep quiet.

We made up a chore chart and its been helping them keep up.  The kids like seeing things checked off and it a good way to cut down on nagging. They know exactly what they need to do every day.

The Chore Chart has helped immensely! It is a clear way for them to know what is expected, for us to track what they are doing and for my husband and I to keep on track as well. There’s no power struggles, since the kids know exactly what is expected throughout the week.

And the best part of this whole thing (besides the learning responsibility thing)? Colin doesn’t want to be left out. He is following around his sisters, ‘helping’ them the way they used to ‘help’ us. So he’s learning how to do the dishes, clean up the kid’s bathroom and pick up his room by watching his sisters. Love it.

What are your tricks for dealing with chores and kids?

this is a sign

I’ve fallen in love.

With a shoe.

(Run with me here.)

Meet the object of my desire:

le sigh

I’ve admired the Stuart Weitzman “Alex” Espadrille Sandal ever since I saw Jennifer Aniston wearing them practically all last summer. They seem like those shoes you would wear constantly because they go with absolutely everything.

photo from vivafashionblog

But alas. They cost $365. Not bad, considering what some celeb shoes cost. (cough cough, Christian Louboutins) But a bit much for me. Okay, a LOT much for me. I’ve been stalking Zappos watching the sales, but to no avail.

Then, look what I found. *cue angels singing*
The Fantasik by Steve Madden. On sale for $69 at Piperlime. IN MY SIZE.

And the Fashion Angels Rejoiced.

try this: slow cooker pork carnitas

I love carnitas. LOVE. I have an amazing recipe, but its a little complicated. These days I need easy, easy easy. So when I saw this recipe for carnitas in the slow cooker on A Year of Slow Cooking, I was immediately ready to try.

So not only was this yummy and super easy, but pork shoulder (also called pork butt for some strange reason) is really cheap and they’re generally gigantic. I picked up the smallest one and it was over 7 pounds. So this is a great recipe to make for a huge crowd or when you want to put half in your freezer for a quick meal later!

**Warning: Your husband may start singing Baby Got Back when you tell him that giant piece of meat is pork butt. Mine immediately broke out with “I like big butts and I can not lie….” and its been stuck in my head all day.**

Slow Cooker Carnitas

5 pounds pork shoulder
1 cup freshly squeezed orange juice (about 2 large oranges)
½ cup freshly squeezed lime juice (about 2 large limes)
14 cloves garlic (whole, peeled. But minced is okay if you got it)
1 tablespoon kosher salt
2 tablespoons cumin
1 cup beef broth
corn tortillas
sour cream, salsa, sliced avocado, shredded cheese, shredded lettuce (whatever you like!)

Use a 6 quart slow cooker. In a small bowl, combine the salt and cumin. Rub mixture all over the pork, then plop into the slow cooker. Add whole garlic cloves. Squeeze on the citrus, and pour the beef broth evenly over the top.

Cook on low for 8-10 hours, or until the pork shreds quite easily with a fork. If your meat is still fully intact after 8 hours, remove and cut into chunks, then return to the crock and flip to high for about an hour or two. It should pretty much fall apart when you poke it with a fork.

Shred meat fully and serve on warmed corn tortillas with desired toppings.

I linked this recipe up at Jo-Lynne’s Gluten Free Recipe Roundup!

DaySpring: Our Faith at Home *GIVEAWAY*

As a family, we constantly are striving to incorporate our faith around our home. A few things we do:

  • We have a shelf of kid’s Bibles and devotional books in our hallway, right outside the kids’ bedrooms, where they can easily access them on their own.
  • My girls both write their memory verses on their mirror with dry erase markers every week, so its displayed where they’ll see it.
  • We have prayer cards for missionaries on our fridge, along with their memory verses.

This month, I was so excited to receive a gorgeous piece of art for our walls with one of my favorite verses.
I put it right in the hallway above our bookcase. I love it. We see it every time we walk up the stairs – and its such a reminder of how we want to live our lives! (And I’ve already had someone ask me where we got it!)

I’m already looking at another one! I would love to get this one, with Joshua 1:9 on it for our mudroom. I would love for this to be the last thing we see before leaving the house:

fashion friday: indecision

So tonight I’m co-hosting a Launch Party for my fashion blog, All Things Chic with Jo-Lynne and Shopafrolic founders Liz Lange and Jane Wagman at Bloomingdale’s in King of Prussia. (Want to join us?)

And I have no idea what to wear. Well, I have three possibilities:

1. This blue ruffley shirt from LOFT, trouser jeans and black platform heels. Probably paired with my Kendra Scott earrings.

2. This light blue, sort of sparkley, ruffled halter, trouser jeans and black heels. Accessories undecided. Probably silver dangley earrings…

3. This red/coral/pink shell, trouser jeans and black wedges. Paired with a short gold chain with a pendant, a longer necklace and earrings from Stella and Dot.

I cannot decide, you guys! Help!! What should I wear?

brunch menu

So ever since I posted a picture of my brunch last week, I’ve been getting questions about what I served. So here’s our menu:

fruit plate (raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, watermelon and mango) from the farmers market

Caramelized Pear Parfaits (caramelized pears, organic vanilla yogurt from Trader Joe’s and Jo-Lynne’s homemade granola)

Cookies (for the kids, from Wegmans) and Scones with Currants

Pistachios (from Trader Joe’s)

Hummus with Beanfield Chips

Beanfield Chips were sent to me as a sample and I was so excited. Two people at the brunch were gluten-free and I was looking for some snacks that they could eat. The Beanfield Chips were a huge hit (even with the non-gluten free guests) and were so yummy. As you know, we’ve been making some changes in our eating lately, looking for healthier foods with less additives and artificial ingredients. Beanfields Snacks are farmed and made in the USA. They are gluten-free, cholesterol-free, trans fat-free, preservative-free and free of every one of the FDA’s eight most common ingredients that trigger food allergies. Plus, Beanfield Snacks is committed to helping update food and business practices – a cause I share.

And these will definitely be making another appearance in our house. My family and I loved the Pico de Gallo!! (Although the Sea Salt & Pepper went better with the hummus – those are probably better if you’re a fan of dipping.) The biggest compliment? My husband said, “Wow! These are awesome! What are they?” Not “What health food snack did you get now?” or “These are good for health food.” or something. And that is the highest praise you can get!
