i’m totally not blogging…

… because I can’t stop watching the Olympics.
Seriously.
I really need to do something besides sitting in front of the tv for the next few weeks.
**********
Yesterday we went to Ikea. Where we ate lunch, then dumped our kids, I mean dropped them off in the free babysitting area (Whoot!!) and wandered around looking at furniture for a marvelous, kid-free hour. (Colin was sleeping in the stroller.) Wonderful!
Then I visited my dream kitchen. Yes, my dream kitchen is found at Ikea. I wished I had brought my camera, so I could take a picture for you all. Its my very favorite kitchen ever and if I every get to design my own kitchen, its going to be just like that! I’ll bring my camera next time, promise!
**********
We got home from Ikea and church and apparently we missed a hurricane. The windows that were left open above our bed were soaked. The windowsill was soaked. The BED was soaked. The nightstands were soaked. Seriously, the windows were only opened about 6 inches. ????

VBS is this week. So if you don’t hear from me again, it means the children won.

this is what you hear when you spend the whole day with gracie

Grace: "Why is it called ‘Barnes and Noble’. What is a noble? They don’t sell barns and nobles. They just sell books. And big cookies. They should just call it the bookstore."

Grace: "My name is not Grace."
Me: "Well, what is your name then?"
Grace: "Grace. DOT COM."

Grace: "Wendy is a girls name. But Hamburger is a boy’s name. So we don’t order hamburgers, just chicken nuggets because we are girls and we don’t like yucky things that are for boys."
Me: "What about McDonalds?"
Grace: "McDonalds is a grandma’s name because that is where Grandmas take you. Mommies don’t because it is just too ‘pensive."

Grace: "I want to go see the Heigh-ho Grandma."
Me: "Heigh-ho?"
Grace: "Heigh. Ho. Grandma."
Me: "Ooooo-kay. Why is Grandma ‘heigh-ho? Like Snow White?  Is it because she has lots of woodland creatures in her yard?"
Grace: "NO! Because she lives in Heigh-Ho!!"
Me: "You mean Ohio?"
Grace: "Yes! Oh-heigh-ho!"

Oh, my Gracie girl…. You continually crack me up.

just. go. to. bed!

Why is that such a hard concept?

I am totally exhausted lately. And it is my own fault.
We’ve been staying up so late. Not watching tv or surfing the Internet or whatever. We’re just getting things done around the house or talking or folding laundry and suddenly we look at the  clock and its midnight.
I just can’t bring myself to go to bed. Not when the kids are sleeping and its so nice and peaceful around here. So I stay up too late and then I’m exhausted the next day.
One of my goals this week was to go to bed at a reasonable time. Yet, here I am. Blogging late into the night. And I’ll be tired tomorrow because I’m not sleeping now.
Just go to bed!!! Alright, alright, I’m going.

call me marilyn

So on Sunday, we walk into the church ten minutes late (ahem) and Colin starts wailing. I turn around and head right back out the door. Just as I step out, a gust of wind goes by and

WHOOSH!

Up goes my skirt. As in all. the. way. UP.

Did I mention that church is located on the main, super busy street? Where people are stopped at a stoplight? Across from a diner that was packed with people having breakfast?

Seriously, you can’t take me anywhere!

grief, refreshed

The other night, I was rocking a fussy Colin to sleep and cuddling him. I was thinking about my sweet baby boy, how much I loved him, how much he was loved by all who know him, how lucky he is to be in our loving extended family. Suddenly, I thought of my step-dad – who Colin is named after.
And I couldn’t breathe. A fresh wave of grief crashed into me.
It breaks my heart to know that Colin will never know his grandpa. He’ll never get to play with him. He’ll never get to sneak Grandma’s fresh-baked cookies with him. He’ll never get tossed into the pool in his pajamas. (Dad was famous for that one.) He’ll never get to sneak into Grandpa’s home office for a mid-day cuddle. He would have been such a fun Grandpa. He would have been crazy about these grandkids. But he never got to see them.
He died eight years ago today.
I always find myself wondering if he can see them from heaven. Do you think he knows about them? Does he know my babies even though he’s not here anymore? I really, really hope he can. That he can see them and love them from where he is. Even though I know its silly to think he’s missing out on something when he’s in heaven…

Its going to be a really hard day.

photo contest

5 Minutes for Mom is having a "summer fun" photo contest and here’s my entry. I could win $500 which could be spent on winter fun. As in heating oil. Since we got our annual contract from the oil company and we’re thinking it might be cheaper just to throw money directly in the furnace.

We’ll call this… "Making friends with nature." We find such interesting creatures in our yard in the summer!

I love how my obviously girly-girl – with her purple crocs and polished nails – has no qualms about holding a slimy, warty toad!! (While I use the zoom lens in order to stay as far away as possible 😉
