try this: 479 Popcorn

I recently got to try out 479 Popcorn. Now I love popcorn. LOVE popcorn. So I was excited to give 479's organic popcorn a try.

Sampler 479 popcorn has 8 incredible distinctive popcorn flavors, made from the finest organic ingredients from around the globe, from Pimentòn de La Vera to Vietnamese cinnamon. All the spices are ground by hand every week, and they blend each flavor combination in small batches for a taste experience that is unmatched.

Every flavor we tried was absolutely fantastic. My favorite flavors were the Black Truffle and White Cheddar. and the Fleur de Sel Caramel. The savory flavor of the Black Truffle and White Cheddar was just fabulous – and the salty/sweet Fleur de Sel Caramel was addictive. My kids' (and sister-in-law's) favorite was the Vietnamese Cinnamon Sugar, while my husband loved the ever-so-slightly spicy Madras Curry Coconut + Cashews.

And just in time for the holidays, they have these fabulous gift collections and sampler packs! They would make fantastic gifts for all those confusing-to-buy-for people on your list.

You can follow 479 Popcorn on Twitter and fan them of Facebook.

so it IS possible to have three kids and not drive a minivan

This past week, I was one lucky Mama and I was able to scoot around town in a brand new 2011 Chevy Traverse.

Let me tell you, I was not sad to leave my minivan behind for a week. That van has been very good to us (including bringing us safely through two accidents), but lets be honest… it is not the coolest car in the world 😉
We've been looking at small SUVS to replace my husband's ten-year-old car because we want something with all wheel drive that would fit our whole family, but I have not been impressed with the interior size. When you have three car seats, you're just limited in your options, I guess. And I've been under the impression that I was going to have to be stuck with a minivan until they all left home and went to college, but look:

DSC_0222-1
That is three car seats – THREE. WITH room for more! I was amazed. So you see those captains chairs? The kids could easily climb in and out without moving seats or climbing over things. WHICH I LOVED. The Traverse is really fun to drive.  It’s remarkably quiet and handles nicely, delivers a smooth ride (even in the very back seat!) and the brakes are remarkably responsive, even in the torrential rain I was driving in.

I LOVE the inside. Its darn pretty on the outside, but the inside really won me over. The dashboard is laid out perfectly – everything is right where it should be. There's tons of room, a place for my coffee mug, my phone, loads of storage – even a special spot to store my GPS. Our Traverse was loaded with a leather interior, all wheel drive, a backup camera, a power lift gate (NICE!!!) and it even included a DVD player, which the kids thought was "SUPER AWESOME!"  The driver’s seat is really comfortable, I loved the adjustable lumbar support – that would make a long drive much more comfy.

My biggest concern with a new car is storage. We take a lot of road trips and go camping, so we need LOTS of room. As you can see, the trunk was surprisingly roomy:
DSC_0225-1
It easily fit a huge load of groceries and the stroller. And the soccer bag. And the dance backpack. And the boxes and boxes of items I carted around town while helping with my daughters' school auction all week. And – unlike the last SUV I tried out – things didn't slide around in the back every time I took a corner. Very annoying. I'd love to try this out for a long trip – I'd be curious how we'd fit everything we'd need for a whole weekend of camping!

There were only a couple things I didn't like. I found the backup camera annoying – I have to parallel park a lot and the little alarm that went off to tell me when I was close to another car drove me nuts. My husband didn't like having the windshield wipers and blinkers on one control, he kept accidentally turning on the wipers when he went to turn. It also seemed like it was a little slow to accelerate when I was merging in heavy traffic, but around town it was just fine.

Bottom line: I really liked this car. My kids loved this car. (My daughter was actually in tears when they came to get it. Then the girls asked if they put all the money in their piggy banks together would they have enough money to buy one. And with a price tag starting at around $30,000, they are a little short.) My husband even liked it (He was really surprised how much he liked it!) The parents at soccer practice were all checking it out and were so impressed. My mom loved it too! This is a great family vehicle – do not forget to add it to your list of cars to check out!

Sheraton Virginia Beach Oceanfront Hotel

My family are I just stayed at the Sheraton Virginia Beach Oceanfront Hotel.

This hotel’s location was fabulous – its right on the beautiful beach that Virginia beach boasts with the boardwalk just in front. The hotel was gorgeous and not at all what I expected. Very posh, but still beachy inside. Plus it is surrounded by several great restaurants and activities, all within walking distance. And check out the pool: my kids deemed it “SUPER SUPER AWESOME!”

Our room was perfect for our family of five: we had a king oceanfront room. There was plenty of room for all five of us and our mountain of luggage. It had everything we needed including a fridge, microwave, huge couch (I hate when hotels have nowhere to sit) and a gorgeous balcony. Not to mention wi-fi and free parking. And it was all for a very reasonable price.

It is an older hotel, so the rooms are not huge (and the bathroom is a little small) but it is in excellent repair and completely modernized. Our room – actually the whole hotel – was spotless.

Every staff member I encountered at this hotel was just fantastic – very friendly and so eager to help. I was alone with my three kids while my husband was in meetings all day, and several employees were offering me extra help – one even insisted in carrying one of my three huge bags up to the room for me as I was also carrying an exhausted two-year-old. I was so impressed!

The only complaint I have is that there was no bathroom near the pool. So when your little one needs to go potty, you have to trek across the pools, up an elevator and through the hotel to the lobby. Of course, the kids hardly cared 😉 It would not stop me at all from staying here again.

The day we were there the fighter jets were flying right over the hotel. A bit loud, but they stopped by nightfall, so it didn’t disturb us at all. Actually, my son was totally jazzed.

I highly recommend the Sheraton Virginia Beach Oceanfront Hotel and would definitely stay here again with my family! They’d love to come back – they loved it too:

aquafina flavorsplash event at morimotos!

This past Thursday, I joined some of my favorite Philly bloggers – and a few new friends from Mom Central – at Morimotos in Philly.

For once, Sarah, Jo-Lynne and I arrived early with no drama. We tend to have unplanned adventures when we travel together, which generally end with us arriving late for things 😉
So the evening was off to a good start! We even had time to snap a picture outside Morimotos:
Morimoto4

We walked up to the cozy, upstairs lounge and first up was to try some Aquafina FlavorSplash!  There were six flavors: Lemon, Grape, Mixed Berry, Strawberry Kiwi, Peach Mango, and Raspberry. I wasn't a fan of the grape (I don't like grape drinks) or the lemon, but I loved the Peach Mango and the Berry. YUMMY! I confess both to not drinking enough water and not really liking plain water very much, so I enjoyed trying this new (calorie-free!) alternative!
And look how cute the tasting display was:
Morimoto11
How fun is that?!! Then came the food.

Oh. My. Word!
I'm not a huge sushi connoisseur, but this was amazing. The lobster appetizer was out of this world and so were the dumplings. And then I hit the sushi hard!! It was hands out the best sushi I've ever had. We all had a great time eating the fantastic food, hanging out and catching up face to face.

Then we made an important discovery: the Lychee Cosmopolitan. I would like to make a motion to make that the official cocktail of the Philly Social Media Moms. Oh, does Mom Central and Aquafina FlavorSplash know moms. Giving us a Mom's Night Out what the doctor ordered!! Thanks so much for the party, Ladies!!

Look at this great crew:

This giveaway is now closed. Congratulations to Amy! Enjoy your new bag!!

I recently discovered the little gem that is Baby Cribs Plus. They carry all the hottest brands of baby cribs, bedding and accessories – even diaper bags – at terrific prices.  They carry tons of the same brands that my local uber-pricey baby boutique has for a lot less. Plus, there's no sales tax and free shipping on all orders over $69.

I love that they have all the classic brands you find everywhere – like Britax and Graco – and also those swanky, unique brands you usually only find in boutiques. Its a great place to get baby gifts for friends or to decorate your nursery in a truly unique way! The artwork by CiCi Art Factory is just darling and I'm in love with the modern and fun crib bedding by Gus & Max. And what new mom (and dad) wouldn't love a hip diaper bag?

brighten your smile with rembrandt **GIVEAWAY**

This giveaway is now closed! Congrats to Megan! Enjoy your new smile!!

I confess that I've tried at-home teeth whitening products before, with slight success, but nothing really spectacular. I've used those strips that start with a "C" and end in "est" along with store brands. They made a difference, but nothing major.  I had a lot of tooth and gum sensitivity with the store brand. And you all know how I love my coffee, red wine and Coke Zero. So when I needed a touch- up, I was so excited to give Rembrandt 2 Hour Whitening Kit a try!

2-hour-whitening-kit It was super easy to use. I loved how the trays formed to fit your teeth to give you great results – and that they covered more than just your six front teeth. They hit your whole smile! The trays were not uncomfortable at all. My teeth look great – my husband even noticed as soon as he got home! As a busy mom of three, I appreciate that Rembrandt has developed a system that works in two hours – not two days, not two weeks. And I didn't have much tooth sensitivity after – which I've had with other teeth whitening systems. I feel it gave me better results than any other at-home teeth whitening product I've tried thus far. I'm planning on picking up some Rembrandt Intense Stain Toothpaste so I can keep drinking my beloved coffee without messing up my new whiter teeth!

Rembrandt is offering a lucky Girlymama reader their very own Rembrandt 2-Hour Whitening Kit!! Here's how to enter:

1. Contest ends Friday, April 16th.
2. Entry #1:
Leave a comment just saying you want to win.
3. Entry #2: Leave a SEPARATE comment telling me what tooth whitening products you've tried and how they worked.
4. Entry #3:  Leave another comment telling me in what way you promoted this contest (i.e., posting about it on your blog or Facebook, Tweeting about it, emailing friends, and/or subscribe to my feed by email or in a reader).

picasso exhibit at the philadelphia museum of art **GIVEAWAY**

This giveaway is now closed! Congratulations to Juice! Enjoy!

DSC_1147-1 Friday evening, our family went to a place that holds a special place in my heart, the Philadelphia Museum of Art. (You may recall that a certain blog author *AHEM. ME!* was proposed to on these very steps!)

We went to see the special exhibit Picasso and the Avant Garde in Paris. It was just fabulous. The exhibit includes over two hundred works of art, including Picasso’s Three Musicians!  We took our girls – ages 5 and 7 – and, yes, even our two-year-old! They really enjoyed it.  This is their third trip to the art museum and they always enjoy it. The colors, the energy, the whole atmosphere of the Picasso exhibit was perfect for them. Ellie even recognized some of the paintings from art classes and Gracie claimed she saw one of Sesame Street before. They seemed drawn to the sculptures – looks like another visit to the Rodin Museum is in order – and really enjoyed the dramatic presentation of the larger paintings. Its such a gorgeous exhibit – even children can appreciate it!

DSC_1133-1I know that when it comes to activities to do with children, the art
museum probably isn’t the first thing that comes to mind. After all, it
is very quiet and full of things you’re not supposed to touch. But I
really encourage you to give it a try. Its probably too much for your
average toddler, but older preschoolers and elementary age kids really
can enjoy it. There is so much to see. My kids love rooms like the ceremonial teahouse and temple hall.
And they recognize lots paintings now from art class or books or tv.
You need to tailor your visit to your kids – go when they are well
rested and have full bellies – and don’t plan on seeing the entire
museum. Be flexible and just enjoy sharing the world of art with your kids. You’ll be amazed at how much you’ll inspire them and how much they’ll learn about art!

Philadelphia Museum of Art is offering a lucky Girlymama reader a copy of Oooh! Picasso – a fabulous book showing children how to see art in different ways!! Here’s how to enter:

1. Contest ends Friday, April 16th.
2. Entry #1: Leave a comment sharing an art memory: when you saw a famous painting or when you first learned about art or another experience with art that has stuck with you.
3. Entry #2: Leave a SEPARATE comment telling me you followed @Philamuseum on Twitter or joined their Facebook Fan Page.
4. Entry #3:  Leave another comment telling me in what way you promoted this contest (i.e., posting about it on your blog or Facebook, Tweeting about it, emailing friends, and/or subscribe to my feed by email or in a reader).

embassy suites – orlando airport

On our recent trip to Orlando, we spent two nights at the Embassy Suites Orlando Airport.

This hotel’s convenience can not be beat – we got our luggage, called the hotel, and they sent the shuttle right over. Within 15 minutes, we were at the hotel checking in. The hotel was very nice and all you expect from a typical Embassy Suites: a huge lobby and gorgeous atrium with a fountain. It was located only 6 miles from the airport and is surrounded by several great restaurants, all within walking distance.

Our room was perfect for our family of five: two queen beds, a crib for the baby and a sofa bed. There was plenty of room for all five of us and our mountain of luggage. It had everything we needed including a fridge, microwave, two televisions (Disney Channel for kids, Olympics for mom and dad), a huge bathroom (big enough for three kids to take a bath!), and a full hot breakfast every morning. And it was all for a very reasonable price.

I highly recommend what we did: The first day we flew in to Orlando, we stayed at Embassy Suites for a night, then caught their airport shuttle back to the airport and hopped on Disney’s Magical Express. Our last night, we did the same – taking the Magical Express to the airport and transferring to to Embassy Suites for a night before flying out the next morning. It was so great with the kids – we were able to decompress and relax before and after the craziness of Disney. After 5 busy, tiring days at Disney, a relaxing night of ordering pizza in our room (and complimentary wine for mom and dad) was just what the doctor ordered!!

The staff at this hotel went above and beyond for our family. At the welcome reception the first evening, one employee – without our asking- found apple juice and a bowl of fresh fruit for my toddler. I was blown away by that little gesture. Then when it was pouring rain, we asked if the front desk had umbrellas we could borrow to walk to a nearby restaurant and they offered to drive us over in the shuttle. The second night we stayed, my husband went to check on the kids in the dark and walked into the coffee table, slicing his leg open. The staff at the front desk was so helpful and concerned for him, providing first aid supplies and even offering to drive him to the ER if he needed.  The staff made this hotel stand out from other Embassy Suites we’ve stayed at.

The only complaint I have is just a general hotel one: thin walls. We could hear the man in the room next to us having a phone conversation like he was in the room with us (which means everyone could probably hear my son’s crying at 1am loud and clear as well). And the open atrium – while gorgeous – was rather loud on the Saturday night we were there while our kids were going to sleep.

All in all, I highly recommend this hotel and would definitely stay here again! The two non-negotiables of a hotel are 1. comfy beds and 2. a great shower. And this hotel had both! (Seriously, very comfy beds and a terrific shower!) See how comfy:

(Baby not sleeping is no indication of how comfy beds are. He isn't a fan of sleep in general.)

Disclosure: i was not compensated financially for this review. photo is from hilton.com, since as soon as we enter a hotel room with our three kids, it no longer is picture-worthy.

greek peak mountain resort

This past weekend, my family and I enjoyed two nights at the brand new Hope Lake Lodge at the Greek Peak Mountain Resort in Cortland, NY in the finger lakes region.

We drove up in a light snow and saw the lodge, warm and welcoming like a postcard! We walked into a gigantic three story lobby, saw a roaring fire in the stone fireplace surrounded by comfy couches and picked up a cup of the complimentary hot coffee that is waiting to be enjoyed all day. Let me tell you, after a drive in the snow with three kids, it was heaven on earth!

We went up to our room and gave a collective “Wow!” It was gorgeous: rustic without being tacky (hard to pull off!), more than enough room for our family of 5, and had all the comforts of home. I was very impressed with how well-stocked the room was.  We’ve stayed at a ton of hotels, condos and timeshares over the years and generally the “kitchens” are ridiculous. Usually they have one small pot and a frying pan and they never have enough dishes.  This kitchen had everything from steak knives to a can opener to cookie sheets to wine glasses to food storage containers. I’ve never seen one like this. There was everything we would have needed to cook a big meal for our family! There was even a dishwasher. We ate breakfast in our room both mornings, relaxing in our pajamas.

There are several room layouts that fit anywhere from 4 to 10 people. We had layout B and it was perfect for us – plenty of room for us and all our stuff. The rooms have tons of storage in the huge closets, so we weren’t constantly tripping over all our boots and suitcases and stuff. You probably know that my two non-negotiables of a hotel are 1) comfy beds and 2) a great shower. The beds here were very comfortable – even the Murphy bed I shared with Colin was nice! The shower was terrific – actually the whole bathroom was gorgeous, now that I think about it!

Cascades Indoor Waterpark (located right in the lodge) was super fun. The kids had such a blast. We could hardly tear them away to eat and sleep – it was all they wanted to do. It was torture when they woke up at seven and had to wait three whole hours for it to open. (“It is open yet?” “What about now?” “Is it open now?”) It was very fun – even for mom and dad. We spent most of our time there over the weekend, going there twice on Saturday and again on Sunday before we left. The waterpark has a great variety of attractions, so its perfect for families with little kids and big kids/grownups.  My husband also went tubing with the girls on Saturday afternoon, which was a huge hit! The girls had never been before and they really enjoyed it. Meanwhile, I got pampered at the gorgeous Waterfall Spa. I was so impressed with how affordable, yet luxurious it was. My Apres Ski Massage was fabulous! I highly recommend scheduling some “me time” while you’re there!

There are two restaurants in Hope Lake Lodge: Acorn Grill and Edgewater Cafe. We hit the Edgewater Cafe for lunch on Saturday while we were at the waterpark. The burgers were very good and the kids devoured a pizza. That night we went to the Acorn Grill, which was excellent. My husband and I both had very yummy meals, going with the entrees our server recommended highest, while the kids happily devoured their chicken fingers. (We skipped dessert at the restaurant and got ice cream at the Edgewater Cafe instead! Yum!)

Greek Peak Resort is a terrific family destination. We had such a terrific time – my kids were in tears when we left, saying they wanted to stay for a whole week next time! I’d love to come back with my extended family — this would be such a great place for a little family reunion! The small touches made a huge difference: hot coffee and muffins in the lobby, a hotel store that actually had reasonable prices, shuttles to the ski area every 10 minutes… Plus, every employee we interacted with was eager to help, very friendly and constantly asking if there was anything they could do to make our stay better.

Disclaimer: greek peak mountain resort provided our family with lodging and other benefits, such as tubing tickets, for the weekend, so my family and I could experience the resort. i was not compensated financially for this post.
