grief, refreshed

This was originally posted August 2009. Today is the anniversary of my dad’s death. Please pray for me and my family today.

The other night, I was rocking a fussy Colin to sleep and cuddling him. I was thinking about my sweet baby boy, how much I loved him, how much he was loved by all who know him, how lucky he is to be in our loving extended family. Suddenly, I thought of my step-dad – who Colin is named after.
And I couldn’t breathe. A fresh wave of grief crashed into me.
It breaks my heart to know that Colin will never know his grandpa. He’ll never get to play with him. He’ll never get to sneak Grandma’s fresh-baked cookies with him. He’ll never get tossed into the pool in his pajamas. (Dad was famous for that one.) He’ll never get to sneak into Grandpa’s home office for a mid-day cuddle. He’ll never get  slipped a piece of candy from Grandpa’s pockets.  He would have been such a fun Grandpa. He would have been crazy about these grandkids. But he never got to see them.
He died eight years ago today.
I always find myself wondering if he can see them from heaven. Do you think he knows about them? Does he know my babies even though he’s not here anymore? I really, really hope he can. That he can see them and love them from where he is. Even though I know its silly to think he’s missing out on something when he’s in heaven…

Its going to be a really hard day.

what i wore this week

Its amazing – with my kids gone, I suddenly have a full schedule of meetings and lunches and dates and excuses to wear something other than yoga pants and a tank top. So, we have a What I Wore Wednesday again!

First up, I wore this really cute ruffled top with my jeggings and jeweled sandals (from Old Navy last year) out to meet a friend for lunch. I picked up this top on sale at Loft a week or two ago and hadn’t worn it yet – I love the soft blue color that perfectly matches my fav earrings.

Next we have a lovely gray top I picked up at Loft last year for like $3 on clearance that I paired with skinny jeans and wedges for a quick date night. I’ve been wearing my hair wavy lately, I think I like it.

Next, I wore this outfit to go shopping and meet a friend for lunch. I love this shirt – I bought this about three years ago on clearance and it has been a staple in my wardrobe ever since. And it matched my purse perfectly 🙂

Then, Tuesday I went to an event at Neimen Marcus to preview the new Rachel Zoe collection (Verdict? YUM!) so I wanted to look put together and trendy. I spotted this gorgeous top at the Loft Outlet on Monday. It was hidden in the back, on sale for only $19. I wore it with jeggings and I got LOADS of compliments on it!

try this: cooking with lawry’s *giveaway*

I had so much fun being a part of Philly’s Lawry’s Cooking Team. We were challenged to come up with a meal around a “holiday” dinner, so we decided to throw a Labor Day couples party.
We are total overachievers, so we went beyond the requested appetizer, main dish and side.. and came up with a bunch of recipes that were SUPER yummy!!
Here’s what we made:
Cheesy Baked Artichoke Dip
1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese (about 2 ounces)
1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
1/4 cup plus 2 tablespoons sour cream
1 tablespoon Lawry’s Seasoned Salt
pinch of salt
2 12-ounce can artichoke hearts packed in water, well drained,
chopped into 1/4-inch pieces
1/4 teaspoon paprika
1 pitch Italian cheese blend, to sprinkle on top of finished dip
French-bread baguette slices, toasted or Gluten Free chips or crackers or celery for dipping

Whisk 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese, mayonnaise, sour cream, and Lawry’s seasoning in medium bowl to blend. Stir in chopped artichoke hearts. Transfer mixture to 3-cup ramekin.
Sprinkle dip with 2 tablespoons grated Mexican cheese and paprika.
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Bake dip until heated through, about 25 minutes (about 35 minutes if chilled).
Preheat broiler. Broil until cheese melts, about 2-3 minutes.

Pineapple Salsa

1 pineapple, chopped
1 onion, chopped
1-2 tsp jalapeno pepper, chopped
1 tbsp grated ginger
1 tbsp brown sugar
1 1/2 tsp Lawry’s seasoned pepper
2 tbsp fresh cilantro

Cook onion over low heat until translucent. Add pineapple, pepper, ginger, sugar and pepper and cook for about 5 minutes. Sprinkle on cilantro. Serve warm or at room temperature.

Lawry’s Rubbed Cedar Plank Salmon

¼ c brown sugar
2 tbsp Lawry’s seasoned pepper
1 Cedar Plank
3 pound salmon

Prepare Cedar Plank according to instructions. Mix brown sugar and seasoned pepper and rub over Salmon. Let sit for 20 minutes. Grill according to Cedar Plank instructions.

Corn on the Cob
Remove outer layers of corn husks
Soak corn in cold water for 20 minutes
peel back husks
dribble olive oil and shake on Lawry’s seasoned salt
push corn husks back around cob and grill for 20-40 minutes, turning every now and again
remove corn and serve

Grilled Balsamic Marinated Vegetables
Fresh local vegetables, cut into bite-size pieces
Lawry’s Balsamic Herb Marinade
Foil

line a dish with foil
mix vegetables in dish
cover with about half a bottle of marinade, cover with another layer of foil
refrigerate for a half hour to an hour
carefully flip over dish and close foil so that it incases the vegetables
Add another layer of foil
Place over a hot grill for 20-40 minutes, turning once. (The longer you cook the vegetables, the softer they will be.)

Dessert
Sweet and Spicy Strawberries and Peaches

1 lb strawberries
3 fresh local peaches
1 tbsp sugar
½ cup water
1 tbsp Lawry’s Balsamic Vinegar Marinade

cut tops of strawberries
slice peaches into slices
marinade in water, marinade, and sugar
place in foil
grill for 5-6 minutes
serve with vanilla ice cream or greek yogurt

Lawry’s Sweet & Seasoned Surprise
2 oz tequila
2 ½ teaspoon sugar
½ cup frozen strawberries
1/2 cup frozen pineapple
1/2 cup frozen peaches
Juice of ½ Lemon
Lawry’s seasoned pepper

Mix above in a blender.
Pour some Seasoned Pepper on a plate
Wet Margarita glass with a lemon and dip in Lawry’s seasoning
Enjoy this salty and sweet drink!

on my own…

So on Saturday, my mom packed up my kids and took them to my grandparents house for a week.

I KNOW, RIGHT?!?!

The kids were really sad to go. I believe a very brief “Yeah, Buh-Bye, Mom” was reluctantly uttered as they yelled for Grandma to get on the road already. I was kissing their cheeks and trying to get one more hug.

Apparently our kids like to be away from us.

But that’s okay. Sometime we like to be away from them back.

We have a wild and crazy week scheduled, packed with exciting adult activities like powerwashing the deck, picking out tile at Home Depot and shampooing the carpets. Don’t worry – we’ll throw in one or two or five date nights as well. And possibly a few extremely competitive rounds of MarioKart.

We’re looking forward to it 🙂

But this begs the question… what is a mommy blogger to write about when she’s not mommying?

GIVE education and support our schools

Tragically, every nine seconds of each school day, a young person drops out of high school in the U.S. P&G’s new campaign, GIVE Education, is working hard to increase awareness of this student dropout crisis in the U.S. and raise funds to help keep millions of students in school. By partnering with Communities In Schools (CIS), one of the nation’s leading dropout prevention organizations, GIVE Education will enable CIS to continue channeling much-needed resources to students who are at greatest risk of dropping out.

Campaign spokesperson John Legend has joined the initiative to generate additional awareness of America’s dropout epidemic and the GIVE Education campaign. With a long track record of philanthropic work and deep commitment to education, Legend will be featured in the campaign’s national television spot, as well as in the dedicated GIVE Education brandSAVER coupon booklet and Facebook page.

Consumers can take simple steps to help “School the Nation” – and help keep kids in school. Here are a few ways to get started:

  1. Save and Do Good: Look for special P&G brandSAVER coupons. For each coupon redeemed, P&G will donate two cents to CIS. Find out where to get your P&G brandSAVER on Facebook. The uncapped donation will be based on the number of coupons redeemed beginning July 31 – the more you save, the more you give. Most coupons expire after four weeks.
  2. Watch to Donate: Watch an exclusive video from John Legend on Facebook where for each view, P&G will donate $.25 to CIS, up to $10,000.

P&G has improved life for more than 300 million children around the world and focused its efforts on helping children in need get off to a healthy start, receive access to education and build skills for life. GIVE Education will enable P&G to touch even more lives by bringing together the power of P&G’s education commitment and reach, CIS’s innovative programs, and Grammy Award-winning recording artist and philanthropist John Legend’s passion for education. I love how P&G is making it so easy for consumers to give back even if they can’t afford to donate time or money.

disclosure: while i wholeheartedly support give education, i was entered to win an ipad by posting about it courtesy of p&g.

fashion friday: a few for fall

I’ve been graphic designing and playing with my kids all week, so I haven’t been shopping at all.

Imagine that. Isn’t it awful?

But I have managed to find a few little gems while writing for my fashion blogAll Things Chic! What can I say? Its an occupational hazard! 😉

1. Colorblocking is HUGE this fall. Check out this little beauty:

2. I. Love. This. Shirt. Its not really ‘fall’ but I still love it.

3. I’ve loved the Mika dress by J Crew for awhile now… and now select colors are only $99. If only I had an excuse to buy it…

4. It can not be a coincidence that the new Rachel Zoe Collection include a “Melissa” bag. Clearly this bag was meant for me.

too bad its so expensive 🙁

5. Now THIS is a suit. LOVE Banana Republic’s new line!

Fashion Friday is the most fashionable day of the week! Thanks for stopping by: link up your fashion posts and join in the fun! Fashion Friday Sponsorships are available – contact us for more information!

the lazy days of summer

…are a myth. Its practically August and I swear we’ve barely stopped moving for weeks.

I survived last week’s VBS. During a heat wave. (Is there some kind of rule that VBS week has to be at least 100 degrees every day? Cause I swear it happens every year.)  I was so exhausted by Friday that I could barely lift my arms. It was totally worth it – the kids had such a blast!! I did crafts and decorations, which gave me free reign at Michaels. This is dangerous.
**sidebar: I will not be featuring my killer outfit you see there in What I Wore Wednesday. For obvious reasons.

We’ve been playing with friends, hitting the pool, enjoying fresh veggies and fruit from the Farmers Market, blueberry picking, trying not to melt, plowing through summer reading, and getting ready for vacation.

I’ve been swamped with my job and some extra freelance design work, which is half fun, half crazy with the kids at home.

Today I get to clean the house. Because nothing shows that you’re having a busy summer like a disaster of a house!!!

what i wore wednesday: smurfs premiere

We had so much fun getting red carpet ready with Suave Kids on Sunday! Here’s the scoop on our cute outfits!

The girls both wore the Dobby Guaze Tie Guaze Dress from Old Navy in Navy. They both picked out accessories at Old Navy as well and topped it off with Smurf-a-rific blue nail polish!

I wore the Goddess Dress by Rachel Pally for Piperlime (which I got TONS of compliments on), my shoes were the double strap sandal from Payless, my bag was the Hannah Clutch by Ellington, and my jewelry is from LOFT, including this gorgeous square cocktail ring. .

little miracles

This morning, I was upstairs and my kids started screaming “MOM MOM! COME QUICK!!” They pointed to a mama deer outside… with her triplet babies. (Sorry for grainy pictures, I was staying back so I wouldn’t scare them!)
