cars 2 + mattel = happy colin

You all know how much my Colin loves Cars. After months and months and months of him asking “Can we see Cars 2 today?” (sidebar: Why do they release movie trailers so early?), we finally saw Cars 2 this weekend. It was fabulous. Colin was THRILLED, laughing and cheering and making stage whispered comments to me throughout the whole thing.

Of course, one of the most exciting things about Cars 2 is…  more cars!   Colin has about ten Lightening McQueen cars. See?

the lightening tower

And about eleven zillion other character cars. But when he started seeing new Cars characters in the store, he noticed. And wanted them all!

Colin was thrilled to get a few Cars toys in the mail, courtesy of Mattel! They are already well loved! The Mattel Die-Cast Cars are the best – we had a few plastic ones and they broke so easily. And they never win races on the racetracks we have! Even Colin knows the difference and prefers these. He says these cars are “SUPER COOL!” and “FUNNY!”  He especially loves the Light & Sounds Cars – and I love that they say more than one thing. It makes them way less irritating than other talking toys. Here we are sharing! (Sorry his face is cut off. I’m a super camera person like that.)

Mattel has TONS of Cars 2 toys that look super fun. I highly doubt we’ll stop with just these four. Colin is dying to get his hands on the Grand Prix Race Launcher and the Tokyo Spinout Track Set! Friends, Family… your Christmas and birthday shopping for Colin is complete. You’re welcome.

disclosure: we received some cars from mattel to facilitate this review. all opinions are mine. or colin’s.

travel safer – and cheaper with a gas card giveaway!

I don’t know about you, but we are road tripping all over the place this summer!  Now that we are a family of 5, we only fly when driving is absolutely out of the question.  Driving – especially with kids in the car — can be really stressful. All of us seasoned moms know about tricks like planning travel games, packing snacks, organizing the driving route, and securing the perfect road trip music playlist to help make the ride easier. But what about your car?  The NAIC has five tips for a stress-free summer road trip:

  1. image via naic.org

Confirm your car insurance is active and premiums are up-to-date. Have a current copy of your insurance card in the car.

  2. Check to see if your policy includes roadside assistance. You can be covered for towing, fuel delivery, lockout service, jump-starts and more. (Our insurance offers this for like $5 a month. Totally worth it!)
  3. If renting a car, check if your current policy includes coverage, and verify limitations with your agent. Some credit cards offer rental coverage, so check with your credit card company to determine if that is an option.
  4. If rental car coverage is not included in your policy, consider adding an insurance rider for a small fee or purchasing coverage from the rental car company. Make sure you don’t duplicate benefits from your existing auto, health or home insurance policy.
  5. Verify your homeowners or renters insurance covers the theft of personal items from a car, especially if you are planning to carry expensive items in your car such as golf clubs, video or digital cameras or laptops.

WIN!!

for the home: easy canvas prints

We love photography and constantly take pictures. We love surrounding ourselves with pictures in our home.  We often change out the pictures in the frames so we can enjoy some new photos of our family as our kids grow up and we have new adventures.

But there are those few pictures – I can think of maybe 5 or 6 – that I just love. I love them so much that my grandchildren will probably remember these pictures hanging up in their grandma’s house.  One of my favorites is one that my husband took of me and my son. It was on our birth announcement and it even won a photo contest. This was the picture I turned into a gorgeous canvas print with Easy Canvas Prints.

It turned out so, so lovely:

Easy Canvas Prints is super simple:
Step One: Choose your size and thickness of the canvas. You can choose either .75 inch thick standard wrap or 1.5 inch gallery wrap. I chose the 1.5 inch because I wanted it to stand alone without a frame. I got an 8×10, but next time I will definitely go bigger. It is so gorgeous – I’d love to get a 16×20 for over the fireplace for my next picture!
Step Two: Upload your image. Easy canvas Prints will tell you if your image quality is high enough resolution, which is a great check that you’re getting a great product.
Step Three: Choose your border. You can get a solid color, a mirror image or you can stretch the photo around the canvas. I chose mirror image, since my photo didn’t have a huge border around the central image.
Step Four: Optional retouching (extra charge) or change your image to black and white or sepia (also extra charge).

A tip from a graphic designer (me) when you edit and crop and such in Picasa, you lose image quality. For something like this, when you need a really high resolution, use Photoshop or let them fix it.

I was very pleased with the whole process. It was super simple, much more affordable than some other photo-to-canvas services and the final product was gorgeous.

Check out my fashion blog, All Things Chic: we’re giving away a 8×10 print from Easy Canvas Prints this week!!

Lipton 100% Natural Teas

You may have been reading about the recent changes I’ve made to our diet. Like cutting out High Fructose Corn Syrup and Food Dyes and switching to more organic foods. Well, my next big step was to give up soda. My kids don’t drink soda. But I love it. I would drink one soda with my lunch. I loved that soda. Of all the changes in diet we’ve made, that has been the hardest for me. I miss soda. But when this arrived in the mail, I cheered up a bit:

I jumped at the chance to try out the new line of Lipton 100% Natural Iced Teas. A way to get my shot of caffeine with simple, all-natural ingredient list! We were going camping for the weekend, so I stocked my cooler with all 6 flavors.  My husband and I tried out all of them.

We loved them all. By far our favorites were the two new flavors – the Green Tea with Passionfruit Mango with the Iced Tea with Pomegranate Blueberry being a close second. Everyone who was with us tried them too and was raving about how good they were. The diet flavors, Diet Green Tea with Watermelon and Diet Green Tea with Citrus, were also good, but both we definitely preferred the regular flavors. I love that companies like Lipton are going more natural and are providing their customers with such healthy options!

Lipton is celebrating the Natural Side of Music with Pandora:

“We created 100% Natural Lipton Iced Tea because we believe that the ultimate iced tea refreshment starts with great tea and simple, natural ingredients,” says Mary Barnard, Vice President and General Manager of the Pepsi Lipton Tea Partnership. “You could say the same is true with an acoustic performance that showcases the raw and natural talent of a musical artist. PANDORA internet radio is a great partner for this summer-long program that encourages consumers to express individuality through their tea and music preferences.”
Fans can interact with the natural elements of music on Lipton PANDORA internet radio stations to cater to their
musical preferences. Stations include Lipton Pop, Lipton Country, Lipton Rock and Lipton Hip-Hop.

How fun is that?? Check out their Facebook page for more details!!

I wrote this review while participating in a blog campaign by Gen-Yknot on behalf of Lipton and received Lipton product samples and a subscription to Pandora One to facilitate my candid review. Gen-Yknot also sent me a promotional item to thank me for my time.

DaySpring: Our Faith at Home *GIVEAWAY*

As a family, we constantly are striving to incorporate our faith around our home. A few things we do:

  • We have a shelf of kid’s Bibles and devotional books in our hallway, right outside the kids’ bedrooms, where they can easily access them on their own.
  • My girls both write their memory verses on their mirror with dry erase markers every week, so its displayed where they’ll see it.
  • We have prayer cards for missionaries on our fridge, along with their memory verses.

This month, I was so excited to receive a gorgeous piece of art for our walls with one of my favorite verses.
I put it right in the hallway above our bookcase. I love it. We see it every time we walk up the stairs – and its such a reminder of how we want to live our lives! (And I’ve already had someone ask me where we got it!)

I’m already looking at another one! I would love to get this one, with Joshua 1:9 on it for our mudroom. I would love for this to be the last thing we see before leaving the house:
There are tons of great deals on wall art like these on sale this month on DaySpring!

brunch menu

So ever since I posted a picture of my brunch last week, I’ve been getting questions about what I served. So here’s our menu:

fruit plate (raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, watermelon and mango) from the farmers market

Caramelized Pear Parfaits (caramelized pears, organic vanilla yogurt from Trader Joe’s and Jo-Lynne’s homemade granola)

Cookies (for the kids, from Wegmans) and Scones with Currants

Pistachios (from Trader Joe’s)

Hummus with Beanfield Chips

Beanfield Chips were sent to me as a sample and I was so excited. Two people at the brunch were gluten-free and I was looking for some snacks that they could eat. The Beanfield Chips were a huge hit (even with the non-gluten free guests) and were so yummy. As you know, we’ve been making some changes in our eating lately, looking for healthier foods with less additives and artificial ingredients. Beanfields Snacks are farmed and made in the USA. They are gluten-free, cholesterol-free, trans fat-free, preservative-free and free of every one of the FDA’s eight most common ingredients that trigger food allergies. Plus, Beanfield Snacks is committed to helping update food and business practices – a cause I share.

And these will definitely be making another appearance in our house. My family and I loved the Pico de Gallo!! (Although the Sea Salt & Pepper went better with the hummus – those are probably better if you’re a fan of dipping.) The biggest compliment? My husband said, “Wow! These are awesome! What are they?” Not “What health food snack did you get now?” or “These are good for health food.” or something. And that is the highest praise you can get!

the flea and the professor at the arden theater

This weekend, we attended opening night of the newest childrens’ play at The Arden Theater, The Flea and the Professor based on the story by Hans Christian Anderson. We had no idea what the play was about, but we were still excited. It turns out it centers around a circus!

A young professor loses everything in the world but the flea who lives in his vest. And that turns out to be plenty. He and the flea become the best of friends, start a circus act, and set off to tour the world. Together our heroes must overcome shipwrecks, cannibals, and tickling. Adapted from the last story by the author of The Little Mermaid, The Ugly Duckling, and The Emperor’s New Clothes, this new musical odyssey celebrates the excitement of the unknown.

The opening night party was amazing, with yummy kid-friendly food from Catering by Design, tasty ice cream from Franklin Fountain and fun activities! The girls went on a scavenger hunt and found themselves making hot air balloons, getting their faces painted and even ending up inside a bubble!

Ellie popping the bubble that surrounded her!

The show was fantastic. Positively magical. It never ceases to amaze me how something like a hot air balloon or a flea circus or a pirate ship can be portrayed on the stage. The girls were entranced, laughing and cheering and having a wonderful time. They both loved it! Grace’s favorite character was the princess with the pink hair (I’m sure you find this shocking), while Ellie loved the Flea! The music was so catchy: the next day all of us were singing the songs – even my husband! It has a great mix of humor for kids and adults and just the right amount of silliness! I would probably recommend this for ages 5 and up, although a mature 4 year-old would probably be fine. After, Grace was thrilled to meet The Professor. She told him, “I’m glad you found a family.” It was so sweet!

gracie and the professor

On the drive to the theater, my kids were asking a zillion questions, as usual. And Grace said, “You know what? I don’t even care what the play is about! I just love going to see plays!” And that is why we take our kids to the theater – especially children’s theater. We’re teaching them to love this art form, to appreciate theater and become a life-long patron of the arts.  That’s why I am so thankful for  programs like the Arden – and for programs like Arden for All that brings theater to children who might not otherwise get the opportunity. If you can, try to take your kids to the theater. For under $100, a family of four can see a show at the Arden. And the memories will last so much longer than you can even imagine.

p.s.
This winter, the Arden is presenting Charlotte’s Web!!!!! Who wants to go with us!?!?

tangled: our new favorite movie *giveaway*

**giveaway is now closed! congrats to our winner, jen!**

We love Tangled. LOVE it.

We saw it in the theater and the whole family loved it. It was cute, funny, exciting – and of course has a happy ending! My son loves Maximus, the horse. (I loved the strong female lead – Rapunzel was brave and sweet!)  I was crying along with my 8-year-old at the sweet ending. And one of the highlights of Gracie’s life was meeting Rapunzel at Disney a few months ago!

So of course the day the Tangled Blu-ray/DVD Combo Pack came out we bought it! (And can we give a collective “THANK YOU” to Disney for the Blu-Ray/DVD Combo pack!? I don’t know about you, but I have children who do not understand the concept of “The blu-ray disc doesn’t play in the car!”) We’ve watched it at least three times and have loaned it out to two friends already.

And Gracie’s current favorite toy? This adorable Disney Toddler Rapunzel. She’s barely put it down since she got it. Its been to a party, a picnic, the dentist and school. Just since Saturday.

try this: panera bread’s new menu items

I love Panera. Its my favorite place to work – I could easily sit there all day with my laptop and a cup of their coffee (half dark roast, half light roast, 2 packets of Sugar in the Raw and a dash of half and half). My kids love it too. Colin inhales the grilled cheese kids meal, while Gracie loves the salads and Ellie claims they have the best chicken noodle soup in the world.

Just this week, I tried the new Thai Chopped Chicken Salad and loved it. Listen to this: All-natural, antibiotic free chicken, romaine, wonton strips, a blend of fire-roasted edamame, red bell pepper and carrot tossed in a Thai Chili Vinaigrette. Topped with strips of seasoned grilled chicken, Thai cashews, fresh cilantro and a peanut drizzle. See?

I loved it – its a bit spicy, so if you don't like foods with a little kick, you might want to stick to the Asian Chicken Salad. But I love spice, so the Thai Chopped Chicken Salad is my new favorite salad!

The kids loved the new Wild Berry Smoothies:

And I love that Panera provides me with a place to take my family that offers things like organic milk and yogurt, all-natural soups, all-natural antibiotic-free meat… as a mom who really watches what my kids eat, this is a something that I really appreciate. Its a place that serves food that my kids really like and that I'm actually comfortable serving them.

cirque du soleil dralion

LargeContentImage Last night, my husband and I saw Dralion.

Breathtaking.

"Fusing the 3000 year-old tradition of Chinese acrobatic arts with the multidisciplinary approach of Cirque du Soleil, Dralion draws its inspiration from Eastern philosophy and its never-ending quest for harmony between humans and nature. The show’s name is derived from its two emblematic creatures: the dragon, symbolizing the East, and the lion, symbolizing the West."

It was incredible. Just incredible! Cirque du Soleil is always beautiful and Dralion is no different. I was in awe of the performers, literally gasping in amazement at what we were seeing! The music, the costumes – all of it was gorgeous. What a spectacular show!
If you're still looking for a last minute gift, Dralion tickets would be perfect – I highly recommend it as a date night! My husband and I had an amazing time! I didn't bring my girls, thinking they were too young, but there were kids their age (8 or so) sitting in front of us and they loved it! Next time Cirque du Soleil comes to town, I'd love to bring the whoel family.
