They work great – you have to buy wiper blades anyway… why not buy ones that support a cause!?!?

halfway to my goal!!

Last month, I shared about how I joined Weight Watchers Online. My first month I lost 4 pounds. Go me!

This month, I lost 3. Its been going well! I’m eating better – including remembering to eat breakfast and making sure I eat healthy food for lunch instead of nibbling on whatever I can find. BUT here’s the cool part.

What I didn’t share with you was my workout plan. In September, I started a Couch to 5K program. I’m now here…

photo

I’m past the half way point! When I started this program, I could barely run the full one minute the program was prompting me to. It was ROUGH. I was dying.  Now I’m up to 8 minute stretches of running and I can go over 2 miles! I have about 3 weeks to go until I run my 5K and I’m so excited.

So I may have lost just 7 pounds on the scale so far, but I can FEEL the difference. Some of my jeans are too big. My ‘skinny’ jeans are back in the rotation. I FEEL great. And I haven’t had to do anything drastic to my diet or had to given up a favorite foods 🙂

Have you every trained for a 5K as a way to get in shape?

disclosure: i have received a complimentary membership to weight watchers online. unfortunately, they don’t lose the weight for me, so i have to do the work and share my progress myself 😉 people following the Weight Watchers plan can expect to lose 1-2 pounds per week.”

another side effect of moving… weight gain

The last few months have been busy.

Perhaps you noticed, what with the moving and traveling and being homeless for 6 weeks and unpacking mountains of boxes.

Anyway, its taken its toll, in more ways than one. We’re all still exhausted – we just don’t have the energy levels we usually have. (Seriously, ask our friends, We tend to be a bit crazy.)

And I’ve seen it on the scale. I gained 12 pounds. I mean, really?? Yes, we were moving and not cooking and eating out and stuff, but 12? Yes, I wasn’t going to the gym, but 12?? Yes, I went to Greece where there are gelato stands on every corner, but 12???

I was desperate. I have cute fall clothes I need to wear. I needed to kick start things and fast.

So I joined Weight Watchers Online.

The first week I gained weight. Cause that’s how I roll. No seriously, I honestly feel like I had no idea what I was even eating. I was still in our summer mode of eating whatever was handy at the time. That was an eye opener.

Now its been 4 weeks and I’m feeling good. I started exercising again and I’m paying attention to what I’m eating. And I’ve lost 4 pounds! GO ME!

Here’s what I learned so far.

  • I graze. I tend to eat small meals all day. This isn’t bad, but when the nearest thing is cookies, that is not good. I’ve been keeping fruits and veggies handy.
  • I’m a champion excuse maker. I can come up with any excuse under the sun not to exercise. If you ever need one, just call me.
  • I need to plan. If I don’t plan out what we’re going to eat, it all falls apart! I’ve started being more diligent in menu planning and I’ve seen a big difference in how healthy we eat – and how less stressed rushed dinner times are!

Have you done Weight Watchers? What was your experience?

don’t forget the donate pile!

This weekend we took part in a community yard sale. It was incredibly freeing to clean out the basement and get rid of things we no longer need. We went through a gazillion boxes and had four piles: Keep, Sell, Donate and Trash.
donatestuffcreatejobs

We ended up selling a bunch of baby toys and books and a few household goods, like some old lamps, throw pillows and baby furniture (like the toddler bed that sold less than 2 minutes after we set it out). All our outgrown clothes, books and kitchen stuff we don’t use anymore we donated to Goodwill.

Did you know that donating one bag of clothing and one bag of books can equal up to 2.3 hours of on-the-job training for someone in your community? Add to that a used lamp, a dusty computer and perhaps a box of DVDs and CDs, and that number nearly doubles to 5.2 hours. A simple item donated to Goodwill® can help provide job training programs, employment placement services and other community-based programs for people who have disabilities, lack education or job experience, or face other challenges to finding employment. In fact, Goodwill is the leading nonprofit provider of job training programs and career services in the United States and Canada.

When you’re cleaning out your closets and switching your clothes from summer to winter, don’t forget your donate pile for Goodwill!

gifting for the holidays

I never know what to gift people for the holidays. I mean, how do you tip the garbage and recycle guys? Wouldn’t they just throw it in the truck when they grab it at 4am in the dark? And the mail carriers – we have like three mail carriers that rotate… People like music and ballet teachers are usually getting some sort of homemade goodie. But what about my sitter? The UrbanSitter 2012 Holiday Gifting Survey Infographic has a great summary:

What To Get Babysitters for Christmas:
3 out of 4 parents surveyed give their babysitter gifts or a year end bonus for Christmas.
– Of the parents who give cash, 17% give less than $25, 39% give $25-75, and 44% give over $75.
– If you live in San Francisco, be prepared to give a bit more, as the average parent gives over $75 to the babysitter for Christmas.
New Yorkers are likely to give the babysitter a year end bonus of over $100!

turkey myths for a safe thanksgiving

This weekend I cooked the biggest turkey EVER. It barely fit in my oven! I was so nervous. Thank goodness I found these myths to guide me from the Ad Council, USDA’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, FDA and CDC, as part of their Food Safe Families campaign to ensure that your Thanksgiving meal is both enjoyable and prepared safely.

Turkey Myths

1.      Myth: Stuffing turkey the night before is a good time saver

Fact: Harmful bacteria can multiply in the stuffing and cause food poisoning when a stuffed bird is refrigerated. The ingredients for the stuffing, wet and dry, can be prepared and refrigerated separately the night before. Then mix the stuffing ingredients together and stuff the bird just before you put the turkey into the oven. For safety, check the internal temperature of the turkey in the innermost part of the thigh and wing, the thickest part of the breast and the stuffing. All should be 165 °F.

2.      Myth: If one turkey takes 3 hours to cook, two will take 6 hours.

Fact: Cooking two turkeys of approximately the same weight, at the same time in a conventional oven does not double the roasting time. In fact, cooking two takes no longer than if there were only one bird in the oven. Just make sure there is sufficient space in the oven for two turkeys so the heat can circulate properly and check each one separately with a food thermometer to make sure they are safely cooked. A whole turkey is safe when cooked to a minimum internal temperature of 165 °F as measured with a food thermometer. The temperature should be checked in the innermost part of the thigh and wing and the thickest part of the breast.

3.      Myth: Thawing on the counter is quick and easy.

Fact: Thawing on the counter may be faster than thawing in the refrigerator, but it’s unsafe for turkey or any meat or poultry product. There are three safe ways to thaw a turkey— in the refrigerator, in cold water, or in the microwave oven. It will take 24 hours for every 5 pounds of weight to thaw in the refrigerator. To thaw in cold water, submerge the bird in its original wrapper in cold water changing the water every 30 minutes. It will take about 30 minutes per pound to thaw this way. Microwave thawing is the third safe option. Make sure the oven is large enough for the bird and follow the microwave instruction manual. Cook the bird immediately if thawed in a microwave or in cold water.

When there is not enough time to thaw frozen foods, or you’re simply in a hurry, it is safe to cook a turkey from the frozen state. The cooking will take approximately 50% longer than the recommended time for fully thawed or fresh turkey. Make sure that the turkey reaches a minimum internal temperature of 165 °F as measured with a food thermometer in three places: in the innermost part of the thigh and wing and the thickest part of the breast.

4.      Myth: Smoked turkey lasts longer.

Fact: Turkeys are smoked for flavor, not to extend the time you can keep them refrigerated. Store a commercially smoked turkey in the refrigerator, unopened, no longer than a week. Once the package is opened, use or freeze the bird within 3 to 4 days.

5.      Myth: A turkey is done when it is golden brown and the juices run clear.

Fact:   Color is not a reliable indicator of doneness or safety. A whole turkey is safely cooked when it reaches a minimum internal temperature of 165 °F as measured with a food thermometer. The temperature should be checked in the innermost part of the thigh and wing and the thickest part of the breast.

I thought my turkey was done because the little thingy popped up. NOPE! I cut it oen and the inside was raw! You NEED to have a food thermometer, folks!!

Good luck with your turkeys this year!

Redbook Launches the Care Packages for Caregivers Program

I am thrilled to hear that Redbook is taking huge strides to care for military families!! Each year thousands of our servicemen and women return home from duty with injuries, both physical and cognitive. For these soldiers and their families the sacrifice doesn’t end once they return home, but lasts a lifetime. We rarely hear about the invisible war heroes, the loved ones make to help support their injured partners never taking a break. For them, the tour of duty never ends. The partners of wounded warriors pour everything they have into providing specialized care for our soldiers, but who takes care of them?

In honor of those who have sacrificed so much for the nation, REDBOOK has partnered with nonprofit organization Operation Gratitude to provide 1,000 military caregivers with special care packages filled with great gifts from retailers such as Old Navy, Coffee Roasters and Bath & Body Works.

Throughout the month of December, REDBOOK is asking others to help join the cause. All they have to do is log on to redbookmag.com/carepackages. There you can write a personal letter gratitude to the spouse of a wounded veteran, or make a donation toward the cost of shipping the packages—every dollar helps make this season just a little sweeter for our military families.

I hope you’ll join me in supporting this amazing cause that gives hard working military families a little pampering for the holidays!

you can’t refreeze meat and other food myths

Have you ever thrown meat in the fridge to defrost only to have plans change? Then I feel like I have to either throw it out or hurry up and cook it. Cause its not good, right? Well, apparently it IS okay to refreeze raw meat! But only if it has been defrosted in the fridge (the safest way to thaw meat.)

The USDA just posted this infographic that debunked quite a few food myths that I was living by…

I was glad to see that I don’t need to stress about bagged lettuce anymore! I almost never wash it and I’m glad I don’t have to feel guilty about it anymore! Do you wash bagged lettuce?

We’re you following any of these myths?
