fashion friday: whitewashed

Its almost Memorial Day! Are you ready to break out your white? (You don't really follow that old rule, do you?)

The White Top: A white denim jacket is a crisp twist on a classic look. And white tops lend so many options!

I love loose, flowy tunics or lightweight tops. But a nicely tailored button down shirt is classic too. White t-shirts do NOT have to be boring. Look for interesting cuts, small embellishments, and even little bits of color.

The White Skirt: So versatile and cute too.

You could go classic and preppy, like this one from Shade. Cute and flirty, like this one from Loft. Or even fun and sporty, like this denim skirt from Loft. And for a more casual look, don't be afraid to try white shorts!

The White Pant: I love the look of white pants. Having small kids and having a superhuman talent for spilling things myself, they rarely stay white so its not a look I often pull off.

But when I do, I have two staples that have been in my closet for years. A pair of white capri pants and a pair of loose, white trouser pants.  I love the new white denim – I'd love a pair of white jeans! I love my current white pants, but they always look wrinkled and it drives me crazy.

The White Dress:

This wrap shirt dress from Shabby Apple is super cute, but I love this white eyelet dress even more!! But this Linen beaded beach dress from Banana Republic is darling!!! And white works great for a casual beach coverup as well.

random bits and pieces

I’ve had an epiphany: airlines stink.

Forget the whole “miracle of flight” thing, it is a miracle that airlines have survived as a business at all. While I do not have an MBA, but even I can see how completely RIDICULOUS the airline ticket pricing is.
We spent last night researching airline tickets for my husband to get to my sister’s wedding the summer and we were ready to tear our hair out. Can someone please explain why it cost $80 to fly from Philly to Columbus, but it costs over $200 to fly to Cleveland? And you have to make THREE stops to get there? Really?
And last week when my husband was booking flights for a business trip, look what he found:

Insane
Yes. That is the EXACT SAME FLIGHT. With a $952 price difference.

Honestly, Airline People. Get it together.

I’m very disappointed with the gymnastics class that we signed Gracie up for. She has had a different teacher each week, yesterday the teacher was late, and she appears to be sitting for the majority of the class. We will be looking elsewhere!!
Gracie, of course, loves it and now wants to be in the Olympics. At least we found a sport she enjoys! Anything involving a ball was out – she spent last soccer season staying as far away from the ball as possible and if, by chance, she did make contact with the ball, it was entirely accidental!
Clearly, she got this from me!!

This Saturday, I’m heading up to NYC again! Last year Philly mom bloggers hosted one of Hebrew National’s Picnic with a Purpose
They were such a great success that they’re doing them again this year!   I was
asked to be a co-host of the NYC Better-Than-A-Picnic Picnic kickoff
party, and I’m so excited!  They’re sending a bus to King of Prussia to take us to the event and there we’ll get to meet up
with a bunch of bloggity friend.

Take a look at the list of co-hosts.

It should be so much fun.  If you’re in or near NYC, you are welcome to
join us.  Visit theMotherhood’s Picnic with a Purpose page for more details or email me to RSVP.  (If you’re in Philly, you are welcome to join us on the bus as well.  There are 25 seats
left!!)

try this: amazing rice krispies treats

I made a TON of these for the bake sale at Ellie's school and they were one of the first things to sell out. These are huge and will remind you of the ones sold at Starbucks! Seriously YUMMY!

Amazing Rice Krispies Treats

6 tbsp unsalted butter
8 cups miniature marshmellows
12 cups Rice Krispies
1/2 – 3/4 cups miniature marshmallows

1. Melt the butter in a large saucepan over low heat. Add 8 cups of miniature marshmallows and stir until completely melted. Remove from heat.

2. Add Rice Krispie cereal and stir until well coated. Add additional miniature marshmellows and stir in.

3.  Using a spatula sprayed with Pam or wax paper, press mixture into a 9x13x2 pan sprayed with Pam. (Pan will be FULL!) Let cool. Then cut into large squares.

rest for the weary

"Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." Matthew 11:28

This was the verse painted on the wall behind the pulpit at the church we went to yesterday. And I realized something:

Perhaps the reason I'm so exhausted and overwhelmed lately is that I'm not resting in the Lord.  I'm worrying over things that are totally and completely out of my hands, stressing over things that are out of my control. I'm holding on to my worries and concerns instead of turning them over to God.

Worrying is forbidden (Philippians 4:6). It is useless, a colossal waste of time. Rest is a divine gift. But why aren't we accepting it?

"Wait for the Lord; be strong, take heart and wait for the Lord." Psalm 27:1

fashion friday: dresses and tunics

Once again I am themeless this week for Fashion Friday, but I've found some adorable things I just need to share! Because spending your money is a favorite hobby of mine.

My three favorite dresses this week:

1. I just LOVE this dress! Being over the age of 19, I think this would be a mite short for me. But wouldn't this look great over a pair of skinny white capris?

2. Shabby Apple's new Parisian Summer-inspired Triumph Collection  is to die for. The Bonheur shirt dress is an absolute classic, but if I was buying any one of these, it would be the sweet and sunny and adorable Tuileries yellow dress:

3. Love, love, love, LOVE this!

My three favorite tunics this week:

1. This ruffle tunic from Anthropologie is so sweet! You could really dress this up and be super cute!

2. This one is adorable! So breezy and summery! (And I love it in Watermelon!!)

3. What do you think of this one? I'm digging the beaded neckline….

thumb wars

We've started being more aggressive in helping Gracie stop sucking her thumb.

And it sucks.

(SUCKS! Get it?)

Somehow as she is getting older, she is sucking her thumb more. She used to just do it when she was sleeping, but now it seems like she does it all the time. While watching tv, while reading books, while in the car… We're constantly reminding her to stop.
She has a thumb guard on her thumb, but all she does is whine and whine and WHINE that she doesn't like it. And how hard it is. And how she can't do it.

Then yesterday… I caught her sucking her OTHER thumb!

UGH! I don't know what to do. Should we just ignore it and let this solve itself? I'm wary of entering into a power struggle that I can't win.

room one: DONE!

Operation TACKLEMYDISGUSTINGHOUSE is underway.  Today I started with the  grossest room:  my kitchen.

I cleaned out the fridge – which was super disgusting. I finally fully cleaned up the wine that leaked all over when the wine box didn't seal properly. I found a few  jars waaaaay in the back that had mold growing in them. Classy!

Then I cleaned out all the cabinets, finding all sorts of nearly empty boxes and – of course – actual empty boxes. Does anyone else's cabinets have tons of empty boxes in it? What the heck??

I also cleaned out the spice cabinet, throwing out spices that I've had since college. COLLEGE! Yum! Bet those tasted amazing.

Tomorrow I'm tackling the mud room. Which still has snow pants hanging up and snow boots on the floor.

Yeah. Its been awhile.
