wummelbox: crafts at our doorstep!

My kids are pretty creative individuals, but there are those days when they still need to be entertained (like every day). When I first heard about Wummelbox, I knew this would be a really great way to keep them busy but learning.

So what is a Wummelbox?  Wummelbox is a European-style arts & crafts subscription service for kids that is designed to inspire learning, creativity and exploration. Wummelbox provides families with all the materials needed for hours of hands-on fun all in one box. The best part for busy parents? It’s conveniently delivered right to your doorstep!

Appropriate for ages 3-8, each Wummelbox is based on a particular theme (i.e., Nutrition, Music, or Color and Light) and includes all the materials needed (plus instructions) for a child to create 3-4 projects. We received the “Nutrition” themed box:

The nutrition-themed Wummelbox had four arts & crafts projects that invite kids to explore the delicious world of food and cooking:

•  We opened our own colorful grocery store and sell our handmade fruit and veggies (Recycle the Wummelbox and turn it into a cash register for your grocery store!) Check out our mad sewing skillz:

•  Become your own head chef and decide what goes into your very own cookbook.  Decorate and personalize your own chef’s apron, too!

•  Play a fruit and veggie game and learn which foods grow on trees or in the ground.

•  Experiment and learn with food. Make paste for art projects out of potatoes and discover how water separates from starch or conduct a “full-feeling” experiment to see how the pace of eating influences how quickly you feel.

My girls had a great time playing the fruit and veggie game with their little brother. They tried many times to trick him but he knew his stuff! And of course, they were all totally inspired and “helped” me make dinner that evening! I decided to make a big salad so they could see all of the ingredients, how it was prepared and learn how important vegetables are to a healthy diet.  After dinner, we all sat down as a family and created our own fruits and veggies and set up a pretend grocery store in our living room. Wummelbox entertained my kids that entire day and they still break it out to create more! Its perfect for a rainy day at home when the kids are getting stir-crazy!  I highly recommend Wummelbox for busy moms.

Wummelbox subscription packages include: Try A Wummel, a 1 month subscription priced at $34.95; Little Wummel, 3-month subscription priced at $24.95 per month; and Big Wummel, a 12-month subscription priced at $19.95 per month.

lactaid: news for my poor tummy

About this time last year, I discovered I was lactose intolerant. I’ve always had trouble with dairy, but suddenly any and all dairy was no longer my lukewarm friend. Now it was my mortal enemy. Like many, many others I realized that those stomach aches weren’t a coincidence – they were directly related to my body’s inability to digest the lactose enzyme.

Lactose Intolerance is surprisingly common.  Most people produce that natural enzyme, lactase, which breaks down lactose (sugar in milk). The amount of lactase your body produces will determine how much lactose your body can break down. So as you lose that lactase, you lose the ability to digest the lactose in milk. And it is common for lactose intolerance to be progressive; many people develop a lactose intolerance later in life. Guess I’m getting old?

land-prd-milkIt was quite sad when I had to say goodbye to some of my favorite foods. Like lattes. (tear) Like ice cream. (SOB! Goodbye, Old Friend!) But my sister recommended Lactaid tablets and I gave it a try. It helped – a lot! I still had trouble eating really good ice cream, but with Lactaid I could comfortably eat frozen yogurt again. Now I always carry Lactaid in my purse, for those dairy emergencies. Like crème brulee on the dessert menu. (Because you should never EVER pass up crème brulee.)

I just recently was on a call with Food Network chef Melissa d’Arabian and registered dietitian Michelle Harrington and learned so much about what lactose intolerance is and how to live with it. And one of those ways to help is Lactaid milk products!  I went out and grabbed some Lactaid milk. I cannot remember the last time I enjoyed milk!  I put it in my coffee, in my cereal and my tummy is so much happier! Even those little glugs of dairy in my coffee were hurting, so this is a fantastic development for me!

Lactaid milk is real milk – it just has had the lactose enzyme removed. For some reason I never knew this. I thought it was like soy milk or something. Clearly, I am a super informed consumer, as usual. But it is just regular milk without the lactose. Same thing, just made so that people like me can drink it. And did you know  that Lactaid also makes ICE CREAM? No joke. Things just got real, people.

LYSOL Healthing Initiative

Well, its sick season around here. I feel like practically everyone we know is sick with something.  They’re just dropping like flies! Luckily, we missed the stomach bug that ripped through the girls’ school these past few weeks. I’d like to think that my crazy cleaning habits have helped keep us healthy!

I’m a little insane about germs – I freely admit it – and I’ve passed it on to my kids who know to wash their hands, carry sanitizer in their lunch boxes, help around the house by disinfecting the light switches and door knobs with Lysol Wipes… We’ve got our cleaning routine down to prevent germs from invading our house.  We’ve had years when we just couldn’t shake stomach bugs or colds – disinfecting, as opposed to simply cleaning, is KEY to keeping my family healthy. So I LOVE how LYSOL is introducing the concept of Healthing – a new idea centered on keeping families as healthy as possible, by looking beyond just cleaning and ensuring that the proper steps are taken to stay well.

Some of my favorite tips from Lysol to help you Healthing around the home:

    1. Know the difference between cleaning and disinfecting! Both are important components of the Healthing process and LYSOL® has products that can help with all related tasks. While cleaning and organizing is certainly important, killing germs on commonly touched surfaces can lower the risk of spreading bacteria and viruses between members of the family.
    2. Start with the basics – wipe down easy to reach surfaces and then move onto the little nooks and crannies.
    3. Use a disinfectant product, like LYSOL® Disinfecting Wipes, to help ensure you’re killing germs as you clean, and think beyond the usual places. Be sure to clean even the smallest surfaces, such as light switches.
    4. Don’t forget to disinfect places that you don’t see or think about often, like the door knobs, cabinet handles or sink drains
    5.   Remember to practice proper hand washing as well after you clean, either with soap and water for 20 seconds or a hand sanitizer. Hand washing is the single most important thing you can do to prevent illness, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Be sure to follow Lysol on Facebook to get great tips on keeping your family healthy!

Disclosure: I participated in a campaign on behalf of Mom Central Consulting for LYSOL®. I received a promotional item to thank me for participating.
